Have spark fuel and compression,gy6 wont start help please By dom (Read 5,457 times)

Hey guys, Ive been reading through looking for a solution to my problem with no luck.
I have compression of 150+,
fuel is pumping to carb(carb is brand new-replaced it when i went to clean the old one only to find out it had smooth headed screws in that were meant to be non-removable, i removed the screws but I already got this new one installed so that's another story),
air filter had small amount of some kind of clean oil on it, doubt its related but i don't wanna leave anything out, i washed that well and it looks and feels like a brand new filter(as it should, its not an old filter at all),
Ive pulled the plug and checked for spark against the head, it looks good.
Set Valve clearances correctly
(fuel is new, fuel lines are new, fuel filter is new)
Was unable to start it w/ carb spray being shot into the manifold nipple or gas squirted into the cylinder through spark plug hole
Best sound it gave me(IMO) was when i had fuel unplugged from carb and rerouted right back to gas tank(to check fuel system flow) it gave some putz's like it wanted to start(but i tried this for some time with no luck so i don't think it was flooded and then recovering)
Tried starting with gas cap off, no difference
tried jump starting, no difference
Not sure what else to even check right now I appreciate any ideas or direction you all can give, thanks

what color spark are you getting ?
what does set valve clearances correctly mean ?
Do you have any play in the flywheel ?
any popping or kicking back ?

Let's get this straight,,, you have spark,,, you have fuel,,, the starter is working it's turning over,,, I think timing is the issue,,, either that or the fuel is bad ,,, we've seen that a few times this past year,,, get a rag wet with the fuel and see if it burns

tvnacman sorry for not including that, set intake at .004" and exhaust at .005" , spark is light blue, flywheel feels solid and i didnt notice and play as i cranked it a few times w/ elec started, as far as pops/kickback no i dont think so the only noise i got it to make other than cranking noise was when i said it "putzed" a couple times like a muffled popping noise, and  cyborg ill try it but i expect it should be fine its brand new gas.........burned how id expect gas to burn(shop towel burned slow and controlled til it reached the gas then the flame engulfed the towel)

Have you changed any parts from the last time it started? Besides the carb and fuel line.

Put it this way "when was it last running and how was it running?" You changed the carb because of the screws, because it needed adjusting or cleaning? Air leaks and vacuum leaks happen when messing with a carb.

It happened a few months ago so I cant remember honestly(was right in the middle of moving, sorry for my stupidity) the motor is pretty new, only a couple hundred miles on it at most, wanted to clean carb because it sat for a few months and i knew it needed it,
WHEN IT WAS RUNNING it ran fine until suddenly not working---(OR....I have 2 scooters)
, again sorry for my stupidity here, but I cant keep them 100% straight, one of the scooters started to die if you gave it too much throttle, if you let off it would recover, if you failed to let off quick enough it would die and be difficult to start,I read this is due to incorrect exhaust valve lash, I personally had guessed it was running rich somehow(local motorcycle shop unplugged the enricher when fixing THIS SCOOT(100%certain) a long time ago when it had its original engine in, once i understood how the enricher worked, and confirmed that mine did in fact work correctly, i theorized this may have been the root of the possible too rich issue at speed, but like i said im not sure it was this scoot that had that issue, I THINK this is the other scooter, and not this one, but I included it incase it is this one and someone recognizes the issue right away)
Stopped running(months ago) before i installed new carb, i had hoped a good carb cleaning was all i needed(that turned into replacing the carb while i fiddled with extracting the screws that didnt wanna come out...and that carb was clogged as hell)(switched old carb back on after cleaning just to try it, no dice)
has yet to run with new carb, set a/f at 2.5 turns out(also tried at 2 turns out)
should be fuel/vac leak free, all hoses are new(vac too)
Changed the coil(had no choice, took it off to try it on the other scoot and never put it back,no longer near other scoot), fuel and vac lines, and carb have all been changed SINCE it stopped running, no part changes were made shortly/immediately before it stopped running

A scooter that starts to die when giving too much throttle etc. can be having gas starvation as in when the fuel pump or petcock is not supplying enough fuel. Same with restarting after this happens. A few seconds after full throttle it starts to die, the fuel in carb bowl has been used up then it wants to die unless you let up. Running seafoam once in a while will keep you from having to tear into the carb.

I agree with this !!!!

I would pull the intake manifold and carb off and dribble some fuel in while cranking see if it will sputter . If it does r/r the vac and fuel hoses and see if it will run on its own .

After re-reading all the above, by all theory this machine should start and run fine. Some times we get all frustrated and keep trying different things that we miss something.

My suggestion.

Pull the plug and replace it with a new one.

Drain the fuel out of the carb by opening the bowl drain screw.

Disconnect vacuum line or lines at the manifold and plug the vacuum nipple (nipples) at the manifold. Ensure the clamp for the carb to manifold is tight and the carb is seated fully into the manifold.

Remove air filter and spray some carb cleaner directly into the throat of the carb and attempt to start.

This will tell you if it is a fuel or vacuum related issue. I have seen some brand new carbs that had float/needle and seat issues.

I'm really glad to see this thread. My situation is EXACTLY like this. I have the scoot listed in the local Craigslist and on this site .. I think the x wife will let me have it for $200. I will follow this thread to the "fix"!
