2008 Jonway YY250-T scooter. Hard starting. By keithpetrella (Read 1,686 times)

Okay lets see if I can describe this issue correctly.
When it is below 60 degrees outside I have to crank and crank and crank to start the scoot.
If it is above 65 degrees outside the scooter will start right up.
I start it in the morning with cranking and cranking and cranking. I get to work park the scooter and when I get off work later in the day about 10 hours to 12 hours later when it is warmer outside and i can start the scooter right up.
I am not getting any noise from the valves, The cam chain tension I replaced that because the bolt and spring rattled out over the last four years. Luckily they are one way and the cam chain did not slip. and it is operating as intended. And this problem existed prior to that issue.
Once the scooter warms up it idles and runs beautifully. Plenty of power and speed without any hesitations. I can actually jump on the highway and take off and reach 70 in a very short distance.
I have always changed the oil regularly. There is a new spark plug in the motor. Also problem existed before changing the spark plug. I replaced that just because I change that every season weather the old plug is good or not.
When motor is warm i just tap the starter and she starts right up with no hesitation. Also when it is cold and just started for the first time it does not like to idle. I have actually fashioned a clip strap to hold the throttle a little open when first starting the scooter when it is cold. after about two minutes of warm up I can remove the strap and everything will be perfectly fine until the next day after the cool night air has plagued me once again.
Could this be a problem with the choke. And if so is there any way at all possible to convert these from a electronic choke to a manual choke system. I never liked electronic chokes in the first place.

That would be my call,,,,may have a problem with the enrichner,,give Jim at rapid repair a call,,,he has a tile ad scrolling at the top of the page if he can't help you I'm sure he can steer you in the right direction,,,a few here on the forum switched to manual choke,,,Alleyoop in particular has a very nice setup,,,but he has a 150 based engine,,,but I'm sure there is a manual setup for your engine

Yep, the auto-enricher is not working. Just change it out. Simple job, shouldn't take you long at all.
I know, you prefer a manual choke, but when it works, the auto is pretty nice.

okay I now know that it is the enricher. Could anyone tell me the proceedure for installing the new one. Do you have to take the carb off the bike to remove the enricher or does it just pull out the top of the carb while still on the bike. I can only see one screw on the carb and wondering if you unscrew that screw and pull out the enricher or if carb needs to be off to unscrew the auto enricher. Any information is completly grateful.

Normally most have TWO screws holding down the "C" clamp around the Enricher, but that is all you do take the screws out 1 or 2 and and then pull the ENRICHER out. The "C" clamp will be in a slot around the ENRICHER.

Ok great I see the second screw
Maybe I could ask for a little knowledge on the way these are wired
They are three wires
One is for a temperature sensor it looks like
I'm assuming
1 is a ground
The other is power
Am I correct in assuming that
The temp sensor turns the enriched off when it is up to temperature and the power feed should have constant power when ignition is on
My whole assumption is
Constant 12v feed when ignition is on
Constant ground
And temp sensor wire tells the unit the temperature to disengage within?
Any feed back is greatly appreciated

What turn off??? are you kidding with that? this is freddie flintstone engineering at its finest,,,there's wax in there that when heated swells and pushes the plunger valve to close,,,i sh!t you not,,,and when they fail they generally fail on so its a major drag,,,,go manual save yourself,, both my present bikes are manual,,,dont miss the auto choke one single solitary moment

HUMMM!! Normally there are only TWO wires on the ENRICHER, and it gets feed voltage as soon as the motor is running. The ENRICHER's Plunger and Needle by default are retracted and in this position it allows fuel to be sucked out of the bowl for cold starts. Once the motor starts it gets voltage and starts to heat up and as it does the plugner and needle extend to shut off the extra fuel.
Here is a picture of a common Enricher:
Can you take a picture of your carb area and where the THIRD wire is connected to?

This is most likely the carb that is on your scoot, notice the ENRICHER has a yellow/green wire.

Ok Allyoop here is the image of where the wire attaches on the engine. There is three wires. 1-yellow 1 Green 1 Green/Black. Any advice that you have would be terrific. Also the power feed yellow is it supposed to receive 12 volts when motor is running? or is it stepped down?
Cyborg. Apparently I am prehistoric era and when freddy is born Ill tell him hello for you. lmao.
As I never dealt with these enrichers before. And Mine failed off and does not function, so it is a horrible pain to start when cold. If I ever dealt with them before I would not have the need to request all of your wonderful advice. if it fails again after installing the new one I will go manual. Cyborg do you know where I can order the needed supplies to install it manually next time?

AH I see the confusion, That is the Termostat sensor so, But the ENRICHER itself has only two wires going to it right, that third wire is not connected to the ENRICHER's head it is just in the same wire loom am I right?

You can see the third green wire going to the sensor here and only two to the ENRICHER:

You are absolutely correct the new enricher also has the same wires in the loom

I have anothe interesting dilemma arise this morning
The new enricher has not arrived yet so I'm waiting patiently for that
But the problem that has come up is
I was driving about 65-70 on the highway and all of a sudden I lost power I could not go 20 mph i slowly got to the next exit pulled into a gas station and the scoot stalled I decided to try to start it and it started right up and took me down the highway with full power I got about 10 miles and it did it again
I pulled right off the shoulder turned it off then back on again and the scoot ran fine the rest of the way to work
Is this type of behavior attributed to a rapidly failing enricher or is there something else I must quickly look deeper into

Not much info to go on ,,i'd put my money on a fuel starvation problem,,,something in the tank intermittantly covering or partially covering the pickup or maybe something floating around in the carb bowl,,,tank venting?,,,could be a number of things really

A friend recommended the fuel pump as he said his snow mobile did the same thing

Has nothing to do with the ENRICHER. it may be pressure in the tank builds up and stops the flow of fuel since it happens after quite a few miles of riding then returns to normal and agin happens after some riding. What is the temperature there if its hot that may be it.
