Hello fellow scooter dudes and dudettes!
First a little about me. I chose the name Dawg named Scooter because when we used to have a dog named scooter. Simple enough right? 1 year ago I bought a 2008 150cc mc-13 bali jmstar (blue) with 4500 miles and it has ran fine up until 3 mos. ago. I'm not really a mechanic but willing to tackle minor issues with enthusiasm. Mainly to save some money ey? So far I replaced a battery and a starter and it cranked right up like a champ and ran fine for a day. Then the next day it CONKED out on me on the way to work. I found the drive belt (Gates powerlink-835-20) busted. Replaced it the with the same exact one.
Heres the problem, my nephew (25yrs) is a motorcycle mechanic and he helped me change my belt. Only removed the left side clutch pully thingy to replace belt. Used a breaker bar w 17mm. Having had issues with my kick start b4 we left out the 2 gears used for the kick start. He said they were not necessary to have the scoot run as good. IS THAT TRUE?
I figured I would replace them at a later time and it looks easy enough. OK so my CURRENT PROBLEM. It cranks plenty good and seems to want to start up, but it just wont stay on. I dont want to fry the starter again. It was left for a week on its big kick stand (covered) while waiting for my part to come in. Maybe some dirt may have slipped in underneath? I'm guessing fuel line problem. It had cranked right up before the belt exchane just 1 week ago. It was pretty low on gas so went to the store and added a gallon of premium gas (always use premium). ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. Will send pics later. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Welcome to the forum. Did you check out our tech section? You may find some helpful hints there. We'll leave this in the new members section for a little bit and then move it down to the 50-200 cc thread.

A couple thoughts - Did you put fresh gas in it? If it's been sitting and there's old gas, you may have some water in there or the carb has some varnish. Try adding some Sea Foam. Have you checked the valve clearance? You can "How to" down in the Tech thread. How about the air filter - clogged/dirty?

NO START AND OR HARD STARTING

Is your KILL SWITCH OFF. If it is on it will not allow Voltage to get to the Coil and Spark Plug.
Some have a safety Kill switch on the Sidestand is the Sidestand up and on the Center Stand.

A. If could just be your ENRICHER(CHOKE) not working.

Before you start it when cold, take it off and IF you see a Spring Between the Plunger and Rubber holder it is EXTENDED and not working. When Cold it should be RETRACTED and feeds extra fuel to the Carb for COLD STARTS. IF EXTENTED WHEN COLD replace it with a new one $10.15 bucks.

1. Adjust the Valves:

If they are to tight it is loosing compression and if to much they will not start or very Hard to Start.
Adjust the INTAKE TOP VALVE to .004 intake and EXHAUST BOTTOM VALVE to .005. See if that fixes the problem. If not go to 2.

2. Spark Plug:

Now you need to check if the Spark Plug is getting Spark.
Take it out or if you have a spare plug use that and just take the Cap off the one on the engine and put the spark plug in the Cap and Hold the Spark Plug Against the Engine to ground it and Crank it.

If you see it Spark then put the Cap back on the Plug in the Engine and move onto the Carb 3.

If No Spark then it is Electrical or bad Switches, COIL, CDI, PICK UP TRIGGER , Wiring etc.. Time to get the Volt Meter out and Find what component is the Culprit.

3. Carb:
Take the Vacuum hose off the INTAKE and squirt a little gas into the nipple. Put the hose back on and see it ATTEMPTS to ACTUALLY FIRE. It may fire and run and die. But if it does then we now know it is a FUEL Delivery problem which could be several things.

A. Disconnect the Fuel Hose from the Carb and crank it, Fuel should stream out of the hose.
If it does we now know that fuel is reaching the Carb Bowl and the Carb needs to be Cleaned out go to “B”.

If “A” is NOT GOOD then check your Fuel Filter it Could be Clogged Go to “4”.

B. Get a Can of Spray Carb Cleaner they come with a nice long thin small straw. Take the Carb off and take the bowl off and unscrew the Jets and clean then out and then spray into all the Holes the Jets screw into. When you squirt into the hole you should see the Spray coming out from in front of the Carb by the Butterfly and also inside where the Needle goes into.
Then put the carb back together and put it back on and give that a shot.

4. Fuel Filter:

Take the Hose off the Filter Closest to the Carb and crank it, Fuel should stream out of the Filter.

If it does we now know that the filter is good go to “5:.

If it Fuel Dribbles out of the Filter change the Filter and try it.

5. Fuel Pump/Petcock/Shutoff Valve:

a. Take the Fuel Hose OFF the Carb and stick it in a container to catch any fuel that may come out.

b. If Fuel Pump/Petcock take the Vacuum Hose off were it connects to by the Carb and SUCK ON IT.

If Fuel Streams out it is good, If nothing comes out or Dribbles out get a new one.

c. If Shutoff Valve, and no fuel comes out when switched to the open position try cleaning it see if you can get fuel to flow out. If you cannot get the fuel to flow then get a new one.

Carb Bowl Off - Green Arrow is your Pilot Jet controled by your Air/Fuel Mixture Screw on Carb.
Red Arrow is your Main Jet controls fuel mid to full throttle.
Yellow Arrow is where the Plunger is that when the Float level drops the Plunger also drops and lets fuel come in to fill the bowl. As the Bowl fills up it pushes the Plunger up to close off the fuel from coming in and this repeats as you are riding.



When You Spray Into the Green Arrow Hole You should see the Spray coming out of these holes:


When You Spray Into the Red Arrow Hole You should see the Spray coming out of the Brass Tube the Needle is sitting down in:

WOW - Thanks folks for all the input - lots to check out - will check out the tech section next chance.
QUICK UPDATE - Took off the air cleaner squirted some quick start into carb and hit the starter. It clicked a bit and nothing - on the 3rd or so attempt it cranked strong again and seemed to want to start but no. I saw some smoke comming from the red positive cable wire that goes to the positive uptop to the battery connect. Oh and I did not mention earlier we had hot wired the starter switch b4 with a new wire running from the starter switch on down to the selenoid switch, battery wires and such>? (My nephew again) It had worked fine since and we also had to tap into the brake lights with a new wire and new push switch monted on the bars for brake lights. ALSO I'm headed to AUTOZONE now to buy a new fuse link thingy that was taken off beacuse it was cheesy and broke off. I know thats a big NO NO. Now I'm thinking electrical issues. I did put fresh gas in it but I will look into all that was mentioned eventually one by one. I really appreciate all your input and suggestions...Thank you very much.

Please don't use quick start. It will rot the rubber parts out of the carb. Better to use carb cleaner or dribble a bit of gas into a vacuum tube connected to the inlet elbow (manifold)

Contrary to what your nephew says, you should have a working kickstarter since it will start the scooter if the battery goes dead. 10 miles from home and a dead battery, you will thank me...

There is no reason to remove the clutch pulley to change the belt. The pulley can be worked by hand and the belt just slips on...

4500 miles you need to adjust the valve gaps... these engines require this every 1000 miles or so.

I also recommend you put the wiring back the way it was.

Premium gas is pointless...it actually retards the spark. You need to clean the fuel system

Clean the carb set, set the valve gaps, replace the wiring to begin with...

The small gear next to the variator on the crankshaft will make one hell of a racket aswell if you don't put back the entire kick starting mechanism ! I know that first hand . Make sure to line up the markings on the kickstart and cam gears aswell. The kickstart spring is a royal pain in the tuchas to get back to its proper place. I use a bigger wrench end .Just watch out for the fingers. the spring doesn't like them if they get in the way . My 2 cents worth.

Well thanks ccprof, alleyoop, jrryan, sprocket, shalom72c billCand mainly for the much needed REALITY CHECK - The feed back, pics and the wiring diagram are awesome. I guess I'm going to have to take my time and try to do things the right way. I'm limited in knowledge and savy so guess I'll look into placing an Ad in Craigslist for a scooter mechanic. Hope to find someone who (hopefully) knows how to work on these chineese bikes. If I'm lucky I might be able to het him to come make a house call. I live in south tx (mcallen) and the the closest dealer is 4.5 hours away in San Antonio. The pics here and the wiring diagram will come in super handy thank you. My problem is time and I'm only off on Mon & Tues. I work retail and get home @10pm so I only have a few hours in the morning. I'll start by attemting to put back the kick start and gears the way they should go. It looks ruff which is probably why my nephew skipped it and he rigged my wiring the quick fix way. He got me running again so I was happy. Then I'll try the carb and wiring in some order. With todays gas prices I'm not ready to give up on my Roketa just yet.. can't wait to get on the road again...Will keep you nice folks posted. Thanks again everyone.

Greetings again everyone. Well tried starting my Roketa again before I replace the gears. My nephew noticed the CDI light was YELLOW not GREEN like before - this is the link to the exact one - CDI - High Performance racing CDI for the GY6 50cc, 125cc and 150cc engines.

He thinks it may have fried due to by passing the fuse link. Does the little light start yellow and turn green after it starts and stays on OR should it be green while cranking. I did not want to order a new one if I didnt need one? The fuel, carb and spark plug issues are OK. Thank you for all your help thus far. Louster

Scooters use two different types of CDIs. Some are AC and some are DC. Use the wrong one and you will fry it in a second...

The DC ones are larger and the AC ones are smaller. Check the wires on the right hand plug... this will tell you what kind you have...

Here is a good explaination of the differences. Also you have to be carefull because some so call performance CDIs are just as big as a DC cdi.

Ok Gents - I really appreciate all your advise and this Forum.
One more update. Placed the scooter on its double stand and replaced the kickstart gears. It started and stays on as long as it I keep rpms up a bit. So I reckon its not a bad CDI? The engine sounds fine at higher rpms. It wont idle on its own and will die if I let go of throttle? While runing I push it off its stand to try to give it a go but it wont and soon dies. It wont start if its not on the double stand. I'm going to look into the valve adjustments and a new spark plug next. Getting close but no cigar, So close and yet so far? Any more suggestions >?

It has to be on the double stand to start... it is a safety thing...

You probably need to adjust the idle speed. The screw is on the right side of the carb where the
wire for the throttle cable attaches... turn it clockwise to increase...

Look at Alley's pictures - it is called idle speed adjustment

I'm confused? Scooter always started when just on the kickstand. The only time I ever used the double stand - when tires up in the air - was to use kick start. I'll try the idle adjustment though.

Well if it is a 250cc then open a thread in the 250cc section otherwise 50cc-200cc is on this thread. So if your scoot is not a 250 this thread is fine.
Some scoots have a safety kill switch on the Sidestand and that has to be up for it to start.
