NEW UPDATE 1st time it died on the road HELP By speedracer (Read 2,290 times)

Well it did go 3900 miles without every stalling and not starting. Today I went to a Dr's appointment which is 8 miles from home. Scoot started right up and off I went. Well about 3 1/2 miles into the trip I was running at about 45 mph all was well. Then I could feel a loss of power and looked at speedo and was doing 40 mph. Gave it some gas and it seemed to pick up for a second or two and then lost power again. I knew then what was coming the big stall. Now I am down to moped speed and pulled into a parking lot where the engine just shut down. I tried to restart it, but no go.

My first thought was a vacuum hose, but not the case all where connected and tight. I knew I couldn't be out of gas as it had a 105 miles since my last fillup, but I shook the scoot and could hear gas sloushing around. The cursing started as I tried several times to get it started, but nothing happened, except battery was starting to wear down. So I let it sit for 15 minutes and tried it again and off it went. It was running at about 1000 RPM's at first. Gave it some gas it went back up to 1800.

I went the rest of the way to the Dr without issue. On the way back it did it again. Loss of power then stalled. I just let it sit for 10 minutes and it started and off I went again for a few miles then once again a stall. Waited again, got it started and stopped at gas station to fill it up. Made it the rest of the way home and now it sits in the garage.

The last few days on making trips to the store the scoot starts cold in a flash, but let it sit at the store for 10 or 30 minutes and it won't start unless I give it throttle. Even then if I let off on the gas it will stall. Then by itself it idles just right and will not stall at all. I could run it all day without a problem. Today it certainly got a lot worse.

New plug, new gas filter, changed oil on Saturday. Values have been adjusted. I ordered a new CDI last Friday in a finally effort, but it hasn't arrived yet. I am too old to take it out again without resolving this issue. BTW Dr was heart Dr and blood pressure was up when I finally arrived there.

Does anyone think my problem maybe the CDI? It sat since Monday afternoon and all day today. Been waiting on a new CDI, but hasn't arrived, hopefully tomorrow. In any event just a few minutes ago I turned the key to start, hit the starter button and off it went. One minute later the idle fell and it stalled. Give it some throttle and it starts up. Once warm it stays running except for yesterday when it just gave up.

Sounds more like a fuel problem than elecetrical, Have you checked your ENRICHER(CHOKE), it may not be working. Also have you cleaned the PILOT JET and passages.

Replaced enricher a few months ago. Haven't checked or cleaned any of the jets, however there hasn't been a time when I put fuel in I didn't add SeaFoam to the tank. Was hoping you thought it was the CDI.

No I do not believe it is the CDI they ususally work or not work(no spark). Did you check the wires from the CDI on the COil and make sure they are not loose on the Coil Connectors.

But they way you said you ride it at low rpms that means your bascially using the PILOT JET system rather than the Main Jet at higher speeds. That is why I think your Pilot Jet and Passages that feed fuel in front of the butterfly is your problem.

Alley, Yes, the wired from the CDI to the coil are both on tight. Funny though after I pulled off the cover on the coil and the wires seemed tight and after putting the cover back on the next day is when it died on me.

To go about 45 to 50 mph the tach is usually between 4200-4500 rpm's. Let me ask you this if I take off and go WOT up to 50 mph am I still using the pilot jet or is the main jet taking over?

I have a 12 year old lawnmover which all I do is change the oil, change the filter, and put a new plug in every year and it always runs great. I don't get how a scooter can have so many problems.

At higher speeds you are mostly working off the MAIN JET, but still some gas is still coming from the PILOT JET. The Pilot Jet feeds fuel all throught the throttle range but much less at higher speeds. That is why if you have a Slight Lean Condition at WOT you can usually get rid of it by Richen up the Air/Fuel Mixture, Happens to me all the time when the weather changes around here in CHI. I will run my TRIKE WOT for a long run and gets to around 60mph and I will hear a BRUP from the Engine, then I just Richen it Up 1/4 to 1/2 turn and all is good.

Our Lawnmovers and Snowblowers etc.. have different Carbs they run at a one speed and do not have to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour and back down and in between. They run at a constant rpm.

Thanks Alley, I will take the carb off and clean out the jets in the morning. Another fun day of retirement in the garage. Good thing my life insurance is all paid up, as this scooter will be put down on my death certificate as the cause of death.

What else would US RE-TIRED OLD FARTS do all day(HEHE). Problem I have is my Ice Bear is running like a BEAR and needs nothing. EXCEPT of course now I am going to HOT ROD it and get it from 149.6cc(s) up to 181cc(s) to tear up the streets around her(HEHE).

Hey Doc were are all getting old and forgetful. Accept for the aggravation of getting to the Dr my report was good. Thankfully my pace maker wasn't made in China. It's working good.

I wanted to give the new CDI a try first before removing carb and cleaning jets, but as usual the USPS is back to it's slow mode again. It was shipped from IL on Friday via "priorty mail" not sure how they came up with that name. Well it hasn't showed up today.

I do have a question on removing the carb. How do you remove the intake cover? Do you have to remove the entire air filter to get at it, or do you have an easier way? I thought of bad gas myself and since have switched from Hess to Sunoco. I never thought I would have a clogged jet since I always use Seafoam. Get to wonder if that stuff actually works or is a waste of money.

Well stupid is the way it is acting. Getting the carb out is going to be less of a hassle then I thought. When replacing it, the front intake goes in first I take it? Also I have a brand new 38 size Jet for a GY6 Carb, I'm betting it is not the same as the one in the 54B.

OK, I was able to remove the carb. Now of the screws are in so tight that I will strip them soon. I have tried 3 different screw drivers and none will turn a screw. Who the hell put those screws in?? I have put a hammer to the end of the screw driver, but that still will not loosen them. Any suggestions appreciated...

Yes, use vise grips and grab them and loosen them up then use the screwdriver.

Alley, I couldn't get the vise grips to turn those screws so I did what I had to do and used a screw extractor on them. 5 minutes and they were out.

I looked at the pilot jet and it sure seems clean. It has 38 marked on it and I had a new 38 pilot jet from my GY6 150. Well they are exactly the same size. the small holes line up, the length was the same so I screwed it in and left the rest for tomorrow.

Of course now I need 4 new screws, but I am not sure of the size.

Was thinking about the nasty poor quality Chinese screws when I heard trouble with them yesterday. Not much different than the stuff you have to assemble from there - always nasty hardware.

I took my Vermont Castings bbq apart when I bought it and replaced all of the cheap screws with stainless from Home Depot - any hardware store with a good hardware isle would do just as good for that matter.

Wish I had my unit so I could give you the measurements off the screws to go replace - if you can obtain a screw pitch gauge, than the first step, verify the thread pitch - likely metric.
Next it would be best if you measure the major o.d. across the threads with a vernier, again likely a metric dia., and combined you should have the numbers you need to go to the store with to make finding the right screws easier.

You may be able to bring the old screws to the store and match them up by eye though. And depending on the store, once you know the dia and pitch, you may also have a choice of head style.

Socket head cap screws are my favorite - depending on needed reach. With this type of screw you can easily carry a set of Allen Keys for minor on-the-road tweaking, nicer than carrying a set of screw drivers.
Socket style Hex heads are less likely to give you trouble unlike those dasterdy Phillips.

So all that said, I had planned on changing out all the screws when I get my new ride and was going to show it off, but the cats out now...hope this helps.
