Scoot runs fine then "bogs" down or shuts off. By bturn (Read 8,411 times)

I've been searching the site and haven't found the exact matching problem but close. It doesn't make sense to me.

Brand new Roketa MC 16K 150. Worked fine to about 70 miles. My wife and I were on the scooter (me 210, my wife 125 lbs). Drove for about 3 miles in urban traffic (Chicago) and scooter started to "bog' down and would stop. It would start but when giving gas it would die.

Went into destination for about an hour. Got on scoot went 4 blocks same thing. Had my wife take a cab home. I was able to get it to limp 4 miles home at about 5-10 mph. Any gas and it would die.

2 days later, went to store 4 blocks away with daughter on back (100 lbs). Came out of store, two blocks later same thing as before, limped home.

3's a charm - Drove 5 miles with only me to destination with no problem. Hour after meeting got on scoot, drove 3/4 mile same thing. Limped home.

Bought scoot wholesale and it was delivered. Took it apart and did some of the PDI, replaced all hoses (in fact the fuel line was delivered with a cut in it), put in new fuel filter, adjusted idle (not carb, was not sure which screw - now I know), did NOT do valves.

I just bought feeler guage and am going to garage now to learn/work on adjustment. .04 intake, .05 exhaust.

PS I am assuming this engine is a GY6?

Yep Bruce, it's a GY6. The valves are the most likely culprit with those kind of symptoms, they can make it act really hinky. They are almost always way off from the factory so they need to be set to rule that out. Get those set and let us know how it shakes out. If that doesn't do it a clogged vapor canister might be your problem. Rich

First check the wires to the coil and the spark plug. The connectors are usually loose and cause erratic ignition, so squeeze them tight and make sure the base of the plug wire is screwed on tight.

Took all the plastic off along with seat bucket. Started scoot and gas was coming out of one of the new lines I installed. Put seat bucket back on bolt/posts - amazingly - the bucket pinches the fuel line AT the nipple and any weight on the seat increases the pinch and therefore cuts the line. So pulled out the Dremel and cut a whole in the bucket to alleviate the pinch. See pix.

I took pix of the valve cover (newbie - I believe that's it). It looks different than the YouTube videos (the metal horseshoe part).

Correct me if I'm wrong, this is the proper item to take off along with the metal horseshoe pipe.

Yes, that is the Valve Cover take that off and you will see the Valves. Line up the Cam Sprocket with the two little holes with the top of the head and the big hole straight up. At that point you should be able to wiggle both valves which means they are off the Cam Lobe and you can adjust both of them without turning it over anymore.

The scoot is getting better (with limited riding).
Did valves .004 and .005
Idled engine to warm up for carburetor adjustment. Increased idle speed with no tach, let it continue to warm. After five minutes, just stopped. Started easily.

Went to adjust carb screw and got lost. I have attached a pic of it for your review.

PS drove the scoot for about 15 minutes. Turned it off, waited 15-20 min. Got back on and ran well. I'll ride longer today.

Other side of carb if that helps to find air/gas mixture screw.

That is a Keihin carb or a knock-off there is probably a plastic cover over the air/fuel mixture screw...you need to carefully remove it, the screw should be underneath the cover where you indicated there is no screw head...

I re-read the post I think you have a fuel delivery problem. I won't adjust the carb at this point.. check your vacuum lines to the petcock.. and make certain you have fuel to the carb...

Thanks guys for your help so far. Drove it about 20 minutes yesterday (twice) and everything is runnin well. Hope to take it for a longer ride today to see how it runs.
