I had some time today to get out and work on the scoot. I got it started several times but was unable to maintain idle. I am not sure what to do to get idle because I have to bump the throttle to keep it running. What do you guys suggest on this issue? Once again this is a 30mm CVK. Also I did not and regular fuel (93 Octane) fuel and i had some Cam II (112 Octane) in a container. so I used about a cup of it. Will this adversely affect the engine and or carb?

@alley - I found that the starter was the reason the battery was being dragged so low. I think the starter was starting to burn up, I switched it out and it has not done the same. Though I have noticed that regardless if I have to keep trying to start the battery, it drains really fast because of the compression.

tvnacman - I looked for my stock carb and I can not find it so I am stuck with this 30mm unit. If I have to buy another one I would much rather tackle the EFI.

I've got a good Keihin 24mm and a cdi that may save your starter . Are you getting kickback when you try to crank or laboring ?

There is some kick back but not much. The biggest issue is just having to continuously crank. I think once I can get it to a point of idle, I would be alright. But it is gettingit to that point that is a little doubting.

Try this GIT,
Turn the FUEL RATIO SCREW CLOCKWISE until it stops and COUNT the number of turns it took to close. You can do this NOT RUNNING then turn it back out 1/2 the turns it took to close.
The 30mm carb has much bigger jets and feeds a lot of fuel.

yea it sounds like a air issue. it needs more air or vacume leak.

I actually did that this afternoon, This is when it began to crank. I turned it out about 2.5 -3 turns counter clockwise and did not move it one way or the other as of when I left it. I had thought that tomorrow I would go half a turn CCW and see what happens. I turned the idle screw down 2.5 times. When running it sounds really good, I am ranter pleased with my work.

Great, then start it up let it warm up at least 5 minutes and then adjust the Fuel Mixture.

Remember turn it 1/4 at a time try LEANING it out first CLOCKWISE if the IDLE GOES up your going in the right direction. If it doesn't then go COUNTER CLOCKWISE more fuel. You want the HIGHEST idle out of that screw then lower the idle with the idle speed screw.

are you sure all your gaskets are seated and sealed? no pin holes in rubber boot for the carb?

Yeah I checked and listened for all those little things. Those are what get you every time

So what do you do to keep it running, that will give a hint as to what it needs.

I have to keep bumping the throttle until I can not keep up with it. I try to tweak the idle or the A/F at the same time but it doesn't work.

Ok, start it up and let it die and pull the plug and see if it is wet or dry. That will help in determining whether it needs more fuel or less fuel. My thinking is the sucker is being flooded to much fuel. Try this turn the Fuel Ratio Screw only one turn out from the closed position and see if it acts better or worse. Now don't forget you also have the ENRICHER feeding it fuel.

Pulling the plug is one thing that I did do and it was definitely dry. I had begin to wonder if I were getting enough fuel from the petcock. So I pulled the fuel line and cranked it over and there seemed to be a free flow of fuel. I will try one turn out in the morning.

Cool, it is one or the other Gti, to much or not enough, now the other thing you should check is HOW MUCH the BUTTERFLY is CLOSED or OPEN that will effect it a lot. TO CLOSED and it will not get enough fuel to open will feed it to much fuel and air at the same time.
What I usually do before I put a carb on is adjust the IDLE SPEED SCREW so that the butterfly exposes AT LEAST one of the PILOT JET HOLES Then I know it is a little open and not completly closed and make sure that the Throttle has a little play before it actually pulls on the cable and opens the butterfly more.

Then start it and if it starts but just barely wants to run I turn the IDLE Speed screw a little more to get the rpms up because when first starting cold the rpms should be well above 1500.
Then as it warms up they should drop because the ENRICHER shut off the extra fuel. Then if the rpms drop to much I set the Idle a little highr to get the motor to run smoother and not attempt to die. Then after that I adjust the FUEL RATIO Mixture to dial it in.
