Sorry to hear about your personal issues. As far as the air box, it acts just like a muffler. The sound waves have to enter an expansion chamber and then find there way around a few turns. This blends them together causing them to cancel themselves out. So it's either replace the air box or find a way to add that confusion to your current system.

It looks as if you got a real good deal on the scope. It does't say there is a probe included but in a pinch you can make a useable one. With instructions you should be able to find on the net. I built one for my scope. A new correct one is tuneable and kind of expensive. Might find one on fleabay. Scope beats mine by 50 miles! Yeah, I had a DOH! moment about 2 hours after I bought the scope; I forgot that I would need probes. I'll just get some of the cheap ones off of ebay. The scope still hasn't shipped and I bought it late Friday night, that's 3 business days so far. The listing stated that the package will usually be shipped within 1 day of payment cleared and I paid with paypal, so instant payment clearing. If the seller doesn't ship today I'll send him a message. I'll see if I can mockup/design/throw together something that will fit around the pod filter and allow me to add some tubing between the carb and the filter and/or the filter and where fresh air will be sucked in. I'd rather not cannibalize the stock airbox for parts if I can avoid it.

One more quick question; should a pod filter be oiled? Edit: Oh man, designing this airbox is turning out to be one of my most involved, complex, A.D.D. inducing, and headache provoking thought exercises ever. I've googled umpteen different airbox designs, pulled inspiration from 1/10 scale exhaust pipes as well as full size automotive mufflers, and went back to reading a book I have on how to design airboxes, intakes, plenums, heads, manifolds, and downpipes for turbocharged engines. I admit, using all of that together on a measly 72cc scoot is the very definition of overkill, but I do want to be able to take pride in what I will build. I have a few very rough sketches of what I want the final product to be and am constantly re-imagining the finer details in my head as I model it. In the most basic sense, I will be building a vertical version of this kind of airbox. Air will be sucked in from the side of the scooter, perpendicular to the front-to-back axis and then turn upward, through a baffle like you might find in a muffler, into an expansion tank which will have horizontal grates across the entire middle section, then the top will taper and fillet into a tube that will go down to the pod filter which will be entirely inside the airbox except for the rubber part that connects to the carb. I realize that is probably impossible to imagine. If I could draw a half-decent sketch I would show you guys and gals what I mean. Also, those above plans are being constantly re-modeled in my head, so what I end up with as a final project may not resemble anything close to what I said earlier.

The seller on ebay still hasn't shipped my scope or responded to my messages. I'll be nice and give him one more day to respond to my messages or ship my scope, but after that I'll have to open a case against him and possibly ruin his 100% positive feedback.

Same deal on cars, bigger scale though. Easy to filter...oil pod if cloth or foam. Harder to make quiet. Some makers call it a silencer. Bought a tuned 1200cc bandit, it had a k&n and thought I would cut a 1" hole in the air box to let a bit more air into it, bad mistake, sounded loud and almost did not run. Took a pop can and some pop rivits and repaired it.
The chinese 150, I put a uni pod on and did not notice any extra noise with a briggs muffler on it.

I did something similar with the muffler on my scoot. I drilled 2 about 3/8" holes right next to the exhaust tip hoping to get a deeper exhaust note. Nope, it just sounded like a muffler with a hole in it. I put bolts in the holes and used high-temp silicone to keep them in place. My scope finally shipped, and I bought 2 probes to go with it. I spent most of today designing an airbox for the pod filter, but when it was finished I didn't like hoe it came out so I'll start something new tomorrow. Here are some renders of my first attempt:

Rain rain, go away. Come again some other day.
I really want to ride my scooter, instead of sitting on my tooter.
(At least I tried to make it rhyme)

Just needed to add an extra line.

Another day, another 3 iterations of a sound-damping airbox done. I think (hope) this will be the last one I design. It is smaller and all contained in a semi-rectangular form so no weak spot for stress fractures. I angled the cold air scoop slightly forward to catch a bit of air, but not so much as to create a ram-air intake that would throw off my tuning. I have to slice it into 3 pieces, print them separately, and glue them together with the filter inside. I'll also need to support it somehow; as it is now, it will only be held up by a small piece of metal on the pod filter. Here's a few pics: This one is the main part of the sound damping while still under development: The rest are of the finished design: It will probably take a full day or more to print all of the pieces.

Before you print it, Just add a battery style door on the side of it with tabs on one end and a screw to hold it closed on the other.

On the subject of wheel balancing beads; should I go for ceramic, glass, or stainless steel?

This is the brand preferred by Gold Wingers; www.innovativebalancing.com/motorcycle.htmIf the inside of your air box is rough it will also be quitter. The texture dissipates the sound waves where smooth just reflects and can amplify them. I learned that researching building speaker boxes.

Ok, thanks.
I used as few fillets as I could on the interior of the airbox. Part 1 of 3 is printing now; 7 hours and 30 minutes for this one piece with the printer running as fast as it can (actually a little faster than it was designed to).
The scope came today; I'm just about to power it up for the first time.
Edit:
Good news! The scope works, at least as far as I can tell without proper probes.
Bad news! Just over an hour into the print and the x axis pulley has come off the stepper motor. Oddly enough I don't have the allen key to remove the set screw from the pulley, but I had to have it when I assembled the thing... The same thing happened a while ago with the y axis pulley as well; I had to put a little bit of loctite on the shaft of the motor before I put on the pulley. I'll do the same thing with the x axis once I get the allen key.
It's time for a nap.
Later dudes.

Dyna beads are what most riders use. They are ceramic.
