Thank you learned one. I think we must promote you to Carnac #1. I officially step down. As many times as I have put those on and taken them off I thought the nut held the outer gear on, I just never thought about it. I just pulled the exhaust and stator on Frankie and pulled the side cover. Indeed, the gear pulls right off over the nut. The only explanation I have is that the gear fits tight against the clutch and seems to want to come off as one unit. I apologize to the Moto Max Parts dealer, I was wrong and he was right. Live and learn, I'm not too proud to admit I am wrong. I'll post some pix as soon as I can get Photobucket to come up. Rich

Well forget about PB, I just put the pic on my wife's server. Here you can see I lifted the gear right off of the shaft after a little tugging and pulling. I just honestly never thought to pull on it. I always removed the nut and pulled gear and clutch off together. Boy do I feel silly. I guess because the oil seeps down out of there it starts to stick to the clutch. I think I did set a personal record for pulling the stator and side cover, it was under ten minutes, BFD. Carnac #2

Thank you for this Bashan. Well I didn't know if the gear should pass over the washer and nut, I felt that such an arrangement would be unstable and "loose". Good that we cleared that one up and thank you very much for taking the time to have a look at this

Just to "finish" this thread, the bike is up and running some time back. After replacing the starter clutch, the motor wouldn't run. Only after adjusting the valve clearences, the motor would run but once the automatic choke came on (in about 2-3 minutes), it just died. I cleaned the carb, had some problems cleaning the pilot jet properly and adjusted the float. The float seemed to close for inlet of fuel into the carb bowl to soon. After this the motor is running nicely Thanks very much for your input guys and have a merry christmas Geir, Reykjavik, Iceland
