I discovered the hose attached to what appears to be a metal plug going into the valve cover of my Honda Clone 247cc. Can anyone tell me what it is and why it would have come loose and got oil everywhere?

That is your crankcase vent hose, if it keeps popping off check down the line for something that is not letting it vent. It has to vent otherwise the crankcase will create a lot of pressure and blow it off.

Thanks Alley! I'll check that. I reinserted it this morning and before I got home it was already blown off. The bike has 1700 miles. Should I have cleaned out the breather hose or is there a collection canister for the blow by?

That's a complex system. There's a vent hose that comes up off of the case and then communicates with that one off of the valve cover. Then it runs to a oil vapor collection unit that runs off of partial vacuum from the carb inlet. Follow that hose around to the air cleaner and you'll find an oil collection box and a drain tube. Things may just need draining off. Alley is spot on, if that hose isn't free flowing you can do serious damage. Check it all carefully before you ride again. Read this. Rich

So I went through the vent hose system and could find nothing obstructing the flow. This is what I found when I removed the breather tube. I'm pretty sure that the abrasion is from after it popped out and was vibrating and rubbing on the edge of the hole it came out of. I'm concerned that there wasn't something keeping the metal tube from backing out of the hole, a keeper from the inside. Does anyone know if there is one and if I should be concerned that there is a loose part in my crank?

I just pulled my valve cover and looked. First, there is a panel bolted over the breather inlet. If anything fell off it could not make it past that. Then, after you take that off, there's a plastic basket filled with steel wool. No, I can't answer that one. Pull the basket out, which nothing could get by, and there is no keeper over the inlet tube. It is stamped into place on my bike and is not going anywhere. It was just a sorry arse stamp job on yours. But if yours is constructed anything like mine, there is nothing down in the crankcase. Worry about the other problems, that's one you can let go. Rich

Rich, I love you man! Thanks. I'm keeping an eye on it. I think you are right in that it's a bad stamp job at factory. Should I have it warranties or just leave it be?

Personally I wouldn't mess with the warranty, I'm too impatient. I'd probably rig up a fitting like Glavey used and hook the hose to that. Rich

So my vent tube blew out again after I tried applying Red RTV sealant to keep it in place. Rich, was is this rig that "Glavley" used? I still haven't heard from KMS. Did they kick the bucket?

Here was my fix: Took a hammer to the vent tube to create just enough out of round to prevent it from backing out. Tapped it into valve cover with a little red RTV. Voila! Good as new.
