Well scooter gang I received my Dr.Pulley sliding roller weights and variator slides today so I thought I would take the variator off and get those switched out.I hadn't done this before so I watched the video and it worked slick there but not here in the garage.I believe an impact would have worked great if I had one.I stuck a small pry bar in between the fins like that guy did but it just snapped them things right off.I figured I would need a new one after the first one broke so I tried again no luck nut is tight.So my question is now since I have to replace the outer finned part I should just go with a new variator since they don't seem to be too expensive at least one I looked at for $39.95? Is there such a thing as a performance type I should go with since I have to replace it? If so are there different sizes or different brands I should be looking for to replace this stock one?Thanks for your help!Born

I'd just get the outer pulley aka fan. You have to get an impact....believe me....save yourself a trip to the psych ward. See what the sliders do before you start buying performance variators. You might be completely satisfied with how it is like that. Don't throw too many things at a scooter at once, you don't know what is doing what....IMO.

@borninabarn, Bashan Bashan is right you need a impact driver,but I know some of you don"t have a air compressor to run one and if you do have a compressor it may be too small ,here's a tip buy a electric impact driver,harbor freight has them for around 40.00 bucks,well worth the cost.and you may need it if you ever what to remove the clutch bell nut. I ran into this same problem and had to grind the nut off,but I wouldn't suggest you do that I'm a retired mechanic so I have experience with problems like this .I made my own locking tool out of a pieces of steel strap and some bolts and nuts ,if your stock fan is like mine it has two 10mm holes in it. just take a piece of strap drill two hole in it the same distance apart as the holes in your fan and thread a bolt thru the holes with a nut on each side of the strap to whole the bolts in place .now place the strap with the bolts into the holes in your fan if you make your strap long enough to hit the ground when the scooter is on it's center stand you won't even have to hold it when you loosen the nut.hope this helps I don't know if I explained it very well ,maybe I need pictures but it's pretty sample. and it works very well .when I reinstall my variator I don't use a impact gun .I use a torque wrench my scoot calls for 35 foot pounds yours maybe different.I do this so I don't have to use a impact to remove the nut the next time, I want to work on the variator. I can remove the nut with just a breaker bar. again I hope this helps.

Thanks Guys! Helps me out alot! This is the last mechanical thing I have to do to the scooter it started right up with the new carb but I will probably have to do something to tweek that in wouldnt I? I see there is a video on that also?Its the wrong time of year here in Iowa (25 degrees)to be test riding.I got the new side covers painted and on just waiting on some cool graphics I ordered from Immortal Graphix to go on the plain silver.The scooter only had 900 miles on it and I think the price was fair for $100?I will get some pics up when Im done.Thanks again!

i have a few air impacts,,,my go to one i use the most often is an electric black and decker automotive Bulldawg 1/2 inch drive,,works like magic,,,makes short work of everything i use it on,,,$25 on CL,,,,worth every penny and more actually

Nitrous thats an idea? Ha Ha! Its funny enough that I am 51 years old had Harleys and now I am souping up a scooter like a 16 year old? Having a hard time growing up I guess? I did get that fricken nut off(the variator nut) and the other before my Wife left for the Philippines Ha.I got out the dremel with the little cut off wheels (about 5) and didnt screw up the threads a few slices in the washer and I screwed up the back side of where the belt slides up so I am going to have to get the whole unit now. You guys know what size and thread pitch those nuts have so I can find another one without buying 4 or so? Thanks,Captain Nitro

You will find it is a lot less expensive to buy an impact than to keep replacing parts screwed up because you don't have the impact wrench. There is even a hammer driven one that sells for $10 or so. I have both and do not use the hammer one on parts that rotate.
A completely frozen nut you can twist off the stud before it comes loose with a breaker bar but a couple raps with an impact and they will come right off. Lug nuts on a car can be tough and you can snap off the wheel stud with a big wrench and gorilla stength but a impact takes them off with no damage.

All the hardware stores and home centers have insane after xmas sales,,,thats when i generally buy or i cruise CL occationally and sometimes i get lucky,,,this impact is several years old and still works like new,,,never have to beat myself up ever again taking off lug nuts,,,or any medium to large nut or bolt,,,and if i have a particularly large or stubborn fastener out comes BIG BERTHA BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one inch drive monster,,,nothing can resist BERTHA!!!!! it is a thing of beauty

Cyborg has a vast tool collection but it's hard to get him to expound on it. He had an account with his Snap On guy where he kept a positive balance and got a new tool every week for years. Hey, what famous tennis player had stock in Snap On Tools? That's right...Billie Jean King...baaaaa...dump! Cyborg has also built many super bikes including Ducatis and a Harley Sportster. So he knows his way around a mechanic's shop. But since his verbal skills are at a third grade level sometimes it's hard to realize that.
