I decided to buy a scooter off Craigslist for my first scooter. It was working on the first day. I rode it for about an hour and then put it away. I didn't touch it for the next 2 days and when I tried to ride it this morning it wouldn't start.
I contacted the seller but they were just ignoring me.
I've been Googling for ideas on why it won't start and one thing I read was that the fuel might not be getting air? So there was a suggestion to try and start the scooter with the fuel cap off. I tried it and the engine started! But it was only for a few seconds and it shut off..
One thing I remember about the scooter when I rode it a few days ago was that it made a squealing sound from the engine area. It would make this sound if I was going down hill or flat ground but the sound would go away if I was going up hill.
The scooter is a jonway 2013 yy50qt-6.
Where do I start with this fixing process?

First of all if I were you I would do some reading. Scooter Doc GY6 Manual By Scooter Doc, scooterdoc.proboards.com/thread/5324/scooter-doc-gy6-manual That is an excellent place to start. We have a library down lower on the home page where you can find a generic manual/ I am not too sure gas is your problem as far as old gas since it was running for an hour. Your scooter was designed for high test chinese gas which is about the same as our cheapest gas sold here in the USA. You have not mentioned if you have a fuel pump or a vacuum gas petcock. If your gas tank is higher than carb it is more than likely a petcock that shuts off the flow when engine is not running. In either case vacuum is extremely important. Any air leaks from the mounting of the carb and the vacuum hoses will give problems as you describe. I doubt if it is missing spark as it tried to start when you vented the tank. By removing the fuel line from the carb and cranking should produce gas flow. There is a carb float bowl drain that could be opened to see if there is flow also. Again I would spend some time reading about how your scooter works or should work so that you can learn to ask more pointed questions. If you do not want to work on your scooter you will find that most shops don't want to work on them either. Chinese scooters are very simple to work on, (probably the simplest engines made) parts are cheap and only days away and there is intense competition selling them on the internet.

First off read up on the gy6 based engines,,,check the oil first off,,,,then I would go thru the fuel system to make sure it's kosher and change to fresh gas,,,then I would adjust the valves ,,,then go riding
