I have a 2007 Yamati Eurostrada RX50 (2-stroke)--no manual. Ran great until it sputtered one day and would only go a few feet upon re-start. Followed procedures for bad gas, cleaned carb, adjusted and lubed throttle, inspected hoses, got new plug, looked for loose or dirty connections, tested battery. The body is on so tight I could only remove the side/bottom panel to check visible connections and decided I needed to remove the bell housing on the stator to be able to reach and test the starter. Once I got to the bell housing I found all kinds of frayed cloth threads and upon further investigation, found the end of what appears the be the cloth sleeve for some wiring to the stator! I cannot remove the bell housing unless you have some tips because I do not have a special tool but I can see from this picture on the link I provided that it is probably the white sleeve going into the stator. My question is, is this very harmful? Has anyone's bike done ok under this condition and if not, how can I get in there to remove it and what is the next step? Attachments:

That sleeve is braided insulation and it may provide a bit of heat protection for the plastic coated wires...
It is there for a reason... so
You need a flywheel puller for your particular engine...and you should get in behind the flywheel where the stator is and see what is happening.. possibly replace the white sleeve...
The flywheel turning, could be cutting it and eventually it will cut the wires...seen this a number of times...

Which one do I need? What do I ask for to replace the white sleeve? Do I need to drain the oil before removing the bell housing and/or stator? Can I repair the stator without removing it? Sorry to be so ignorant. This is my first mechanical troubleshooting experience..

You can get a few things at an auto parts store like fuel line and spark plugs. You'll have to get most scooter tools at a scooter parts dealer. Click on Scrappy Dog at the top of the site, you'll have the best luck getting two stroke items from him. Have your bike name and engine number ready when you call and tell them you need a flywheel puller and some valium. That plastic comes off, believe me, there's a way in there. They put it together, it'll come apart. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to work around it. We have a post in the library on flywheel removal in electrical. It's for a GY6 150 but it'll be similar. Take a breath and try to slow up, these things have a way of working out.

Thanks, guys! You're right. Measure twice, cut once.
