I drove my scoot to the office for the first time today. It did a GREAT job and maintained what seemed to be about 50-55 mph. I'm still working on upgrading my belt to a slightly longer one to get some higher top-end.
My question today is this; why would my trip meter, on a 28 mile trip, say that it was 37+ miles? My speedometer is in Mph not Kmph.
Any ideas?

It is the odometer gear... you may find an after market one in miles, but all the ones I have seen are kms
You will likely need to purchase the whole speedo head and then you could run into issues fitting it into your dash...
