Thanks Alleyoop. This was one of the 1st things I did and it did nothing but spark - literal sparks. They were minor but there was no spinning and I have tried a couple of more times just to be sure and there was absolutely nothing - not even sparks.

Well I think it is time to get a new Starter, your battery is good and your solenoid sparks when you touch the terminals which would send the juice directly to the Starter.
What your doing there is bypassing everything and just sending the battery juice to the starter.

Starter... replace the brushes and clean the commutator or just replace the whole unit
