Hello,
I have a 50cc Tao Tao. It will start and run with a fully charged battery. When the battery gets low I have to use the kick starter until I charge the battery again. Is there an easy way to tell if the stator or the regulator is bad?
Also have a 50cc Peace Sports Trans It. This scooter will run great for a little while as I ride it. Seems like about 5 or 10 minutes later it will lose power and shut down. It will start back up right away though, then shut off within a few minutes. It gets worst the longer the trip. Any suggestions?
Thanks All :-)

Hi John,
Sorry, I have not time to get back to it yet. From what I have been told I am thinking it is the regulator. Was told if it was the stator I would not get a spark. I hope to test it this weekend.

could be the regulator , are your brake lights working correctly ? the 50cc's have a marginal charging system . Does the scooter start easy with the electric starter ? When you turn the ignition on do any lights go on ? www.testedscooterparts.com/John

Those links Alley gave you should help. Also, I would put a multi on the battery terminals, give it some RPMs, and see if it gives you about 13 to 14v DC. If it does you probably have a bad battery that won't fully charge off of the bike but the stator and regulator (R/R) are doing their job. If you don't get 13 to 14v DC then you probably have a bad stator or R/R.
To test the output of the stator set your multi to AC and find a good ground for the black probe such as the engine or frame. Unhook the white wire from the regulator and put the red probe into the connector on the white wire. Start your engine and give it some RPMs. You should get something like this:
Reconnect the white and unhook the yellow. Test it in the same fashion:
The white provides the charging current and the yellow does the AC lights like the headlights. If your voltages are somewhat different don't panic, there's a lot a variation from one stator to another. However, they should be close. If your voltages are significantly less on either wire then your stator is toast.
If your stator voltages are OK then hook all the wires back up to the R/R and start the bike. Now touch your red probe to any exposed spot on the yellow wire. It doesn't matter where, the whole wire is regulated. You should get close to 12v AC. Then do the same to the white wire and you should get 12v AC again. If you don't then the R/R is bad.
Although the blue/white andred/black wires don't have anything to do with our discussion on charging, you can test them in the same manner:
