My manual on my BMS 260cc says to use 10w-40 oil for my gear oil on the rear wheel. Most forums tell me to use 80w-90 weight. I'm confused! Which is the correct weight and type of oil to use??? I removed the fill plug in the back and smelled the oil land it smelled like 80w-90 not like 10w-40. I am more confused! Help!

I have the MC-54-250B roketa scooter, I use the 80w90 for my gear oil and 10w40 oil to change my motor oil, I don't think it would be good to use the 10w40 for the gear oil, gear oil is more designed for those gears.

The only problem I have is that I'm used to riding motorcycles. In those engines, the engine and transmission are one unit. The oil that oils the engine is the same as the oil for the transmission. I'm speaking of japanese motorcycles and not Harley's that have a separate transmission. This is why I tend to believe to use a 10w40 for the transmission. Any more opinions? I sure need them.

Bobiii, You can use 10w40 in the tranny, 10w40 is equivalent to 80w90 tranny oil. They number the tranny oils different but most regular oils have an equivalent to tranny weight oils. Alleyoop

Found this interesting article on gear oil vs motor oil. I hope it clears up some points. It's a pdf file and I'm enclosing the link. www.bestlubeusa.com/gearlube.pdf

Yea, you can find those articles about oils from every oil company around then you can find some from labs that tested the stuff. I myself go with what the labs that test the different oils more than the oil companies stuff. Each oil company will always be pushing their oils and that is expected. Alleyoop

I'm convinced that I should use 80w-90. Thanks for everyone's help!

I don't understand why people make a big deal about oil for the scoots, it is not a precision motor heck they will run on honey. Just use your regular 10w30 or 10w40 and 80w90 for your gear oil and your done. Because the oil and air is the only thing that cools the motors you should change the crankcase oil every 1000 miles or so and the gear oil every 2nd oil change. Alleyoop
