We were able to get the roots of the plug out of the oil pan. There was a bit of the cap still attached so it took the following method:
insert a chizel or screw driver in to the grooves of the part left inside, then knock it in to place. Going in the correct direction, tap the tool until you get movement. If not, then reset the position and try again. After a few taps the threads should loosen, and you will be able to get that piece out of there, and replace it with a new one.
