Ok, piston seized due to heat. Tried removing wrist pin to remove piston, but it's stuck. The piston moves freely sideways on t he wrist pin but is stuck at the ends where the retaining clips are. Tried the threaded bolt with plug spanner method, does not budge. Going to heat the wrist up with heat gun and see if that does the trick. Would like to know why she heat seized, there is enough oil in the motor. Could it be that the oil pump has gone bad?

Cyborg, on second thoughts. The damage on the piston and sleeve was probably caused by dirt. I stay on a farm (you guys call it a ranch) just outside Cape Town, South Africa. A while ago i lifted the cover off to check carb and noticed that the air filter box had come off the carb. You live, you learn. So guys and gals , just check every now and then that the box is attached, especially if YOU stay in areas with dirt roads!

Thanks for advise Cyborg, will take a look. Do you mean the wrist pin that goes "through" the piston and is there supposed to be a bush (conrod top end)?

Thanks Alleyoop for the reply. After removing plug i clean the tip, insert the plug in boot and hold it against the valve cover/motor (there is a ground wire attached from valve cover to frame), kick start and there is spark. As per my initial post, the only thing left to check would be the ignition timing. When i adjusted the valve clearances, i noticed when turning the flywheel onto the T mark, the camshaft sprocket holes (two small ones) did not align 100% parallel with the cylinder. Hence my question "If the starter gears jammed on the crank shaft, interfered with the sprocket on the crank and possibly the cause of the scooter stalling and at the same time could this have caused the timing chain to "skip" one or two teeth on the camshaft sprocket and thereby getting the ignition time out?

Hi there  . Scooter make and model-Jonway Galactica, model QMJ 157 GY6. Here is my situation. My son was riding his Jonway when all of a sudden it just stalled and died. He said the scooter acted as if he switched on the kill switch (which he did not do) and the was a strange smell coming from the scooter. Loaded scooter on van and brought it home to find out that the kick starter was jammed. Took apart and fixed. Now the scooter won't start. I have spark, fuel and compression (finger in spark plug hole test). The engine cranks on both electric start and kick start but will not run. I have checked the connector plugs leading to the CDI with a digital multimeter, all readings are good. I have also swapped out the CDI, no go. Took carb off, cleaned all jets etc, no go. Adjusted valve clearance, no go. Remove spark plug and the tip is moist. Question, if the starter gears jammed on the crank shaft, could this have caused the timing chain to "skip" one or two teeth on the camshaft sprocket and thereby getting the ignition time out? I am at my whits end and don't know where to look anymore to find the fault. Will appreciate any response, questions or advice. Thanks in advance  |
