I cleaned my carb. I was expecting it to be dirtier that it was. Still not the bottom end I expected once the engine warmed up. I will look at my clutch next. Anyone know of a tutorial on 139qmb clutches? I havent gotten to that side of the transmission yet. Top speed is not an issue. I go as fast as I ought to. It's just the takeoff from a stop light that concerns me. The longer I run the scoot the more I have to fred Flintstone it.

The research I've done tells me I have a dirty carb. I changed to lighter rollers and I still had slow takeoff once the bike warmed up.

When I first twist the throttle my scooter is a little slow going. Once it gets up to speed it's fine. This wasn't always the case. Could I be bogging at quarter throttle? If so is it a carb issue?

The rain held off so I decided I would hop on my Chinese scooter with the 72cc bbk and take her for an adventure. I decided I would take a ride downtown. I live in St. Louis and according to google maps it's only 8 miles but I think the route I took was a bit more since there were some streets I wanted to avoid. so I'm riding and everything is hunky dory, I pass by "the hill" which is St. Louis' little italy, turn down Manchester Avenue and go through "The Grove" a neighborhood full of hipsters near St. Louis University. I go through some questionable neighborhoods, then finally, I ride by the Arch and Busch Stadium. All is well, or so I thought. on the way back I noticed my takeoff wasn't as zippy as before, then the scooter got louder, and louder. I made it home thank goodness but something was definitely not right Turns out my muffler was hanging on by one bolt. one of the studs was missing and it was misaligned from the exhaust on the head. if it wasn't for that one bolt the whole muffler would have just fallen off. plus, my speedometer quit working somewhere through all that. I'm guessing i just need a new cable. on the upside, I didn't have to push. on the downside, I'm not sure if I did any permanent damage to the engine . in the future I will ALWAYS use locktite. Lesson learned.

I beleive I fixed it. It's nowhere near as loud now. As a matter of fact I started it in a parking garage and I wasn't sure if it was running. I'm not used to it being that quiet at idle

All is not perfect. I seem to be leaking oil
on the upside I went and changed out the sliders fo 4.5 g rollers and that think takes off like a bat out of heck.

I got the kit on today. In hindsight I should have removed the engine because it's kind of a nucklebuster on the bike. Everything went on ok as far as I can tell. I started it up and took off like a rocketship. There are too many stops to really go WOT but I will check top speed when I get it broken in. One thing I noticed is that the bike is louder. it could be I screwed up putting on the gasket but I dunno. I am not a fan of loud pipes. So far I am pleased with my choice. I ordered 4.5gram weights but I am thinking I don't need them. I take off just fine with 6g sliders

ok. I was in the neighborhood so I ran by one of the more reputable scooter shops in town and got a 47mm bbk. is it worth it to get a performance camshaft like Scrappy's a9?

Some places say you have to bore your case for a 50mm. Is that true? I really don't NEED 80cc...but if I can do it I may as well. I can totally live with a 47mm kit.

Does valve length matter if I'm replacing the head too?

thanks as always Alley. I love riding it as is but I know there is room for improvement. I had a chance to get a 79 Yamaha dt125 that needed work but the guy didn't have the title so I passed I also saw a honda express for a really great price but I'm just too dang heavy for those so my summer project will continue to be futzing with my tao tao. That sounds dirtier than it really is.

I'm pretty much a rookie. Do I get a larger intake & carb or do I just upjet?

I'm a hopeless tinkerer. I would like to keep messing with my tao tao atm50. So far I have replaced the stock carb, replaced the broken airbox with a pod filter, went up to an 85 jet and replaced the rear tire. What should I do next? If I was to do a bbk should I just do the 47mm? Should I keep the engine as is and replace the variator? Clutch springs?
The easy answer is "leave well enough alone and ride that sucker" I love to work on things as much as I like riding them. I could find another junk scooter and start over but I don't want to keep explaining to the missus why more stuff keeps showing up in our garage.
