Is it normal for the odometer to read 1.5 miles on my new scooter?

The $21.99 tester is the one I have. www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=compression+testerIf you are going to continue to work on these engines they are essential. Takes all the guess work out. You have a scooter that was running good yesterday and now it shuts down when hot.....pull the plug and check compression and if its low or gone you adjust valves. Recording it when you change oil over several years could show the health of the rings. It's a real quick way to diagnose problems. I'm on it. Thanks John.

Educate me @lanternscooter . Not familiar with a converter. yup like Bashan just said. it can get clogged with soot however because its just a mass of very small passages. the thing itself is like a honeycomb made of platinum and other catalytic materials (actually called a PLATINUM MONOLITH ). it converts unburnt hydrocarbons like a burner with additional oxygen from the PAIR system, and if the PAIR is unhooked it doesnt function as well or get as hot and can clog. OK, I get it. Like Bashan said it's a CAT for a scooter. Is it inside the muffler housing? Is it something that needs replaced or can it be cleaned with solvent or something?

Educate me @lanternscooter . Not familiar with a converter. Bashan I have the 842 on there but it seemed like I had more power before I swapped out the starter clutch. I don't have compression equipment.

I don't get it. My little scoot just doesn't seem to have the power it once did. At take off it seems fine, but it really seems like it is lugging the motor for the rest of the power band. It eventually gets up to top speed but at a slower pace than before. Penny for your thoughts.

jvino, yes, it came yesterday. You can follow my PDI process on it in the thread I created in the 250cc area of the board. Thanks for asking dude. I'm really excited about it.

Thanks Guitarman that link is great! And that would be fine with me Bashan . So it arrived yesterday in the late afternoon. I had about 20 min to look it over before signing off on it. It looked to be in great shape with no visible damage. Had to let it sit until I was off work at 10PM and then I uncrated it and went to bed. Untitled by mxmattaz, on Flickr Untitled by mxmattaz, on Flickr Untitled by mxmattaz, on Flickr Untitled by mxmattaz, on Flickr I'm going to start the tear down today. So glad to have it. I'm doing everything I can to resist the urge to hurry through the PDI so that I can ride it.

Just got my confirmation email from killermotorsports with tracking information and delivery instructions. UPS tracking indicates my scoot will be delivered today. I'm a little nervous about doing this the right way and all. I'm looking to JR, Alleyoop, Bashan, DrRocco for reliable info for a successful experience. No pressure boys!

Good advice Bashan. I'll have to consider that. jct842, I'm not sure if it is hurting anything. I am getting a pretty loud ticking noise so I'm not sure if the valves were also damaged.

Hey Alley, I've been doing my homework on replacing these valve guides before I order them and I have a question for you. Ok, maybe a couple. 1. Is replacing these something I can do properly, or should it be left for a pro? 2. Is it necessary to use a Valve Guide Reamer or do new guides typically come "pre-reamed?" 3. What does reaming do? Thanks.

+10 on valve guides like I said after shutting off the oil is leaking through and then when you start it it goes away CLASSIC SYMPTOM of Leaking Valve guides. Alleyoop In the few months that I have been here I have learnt a couple things. One of them is Alleyoop is almost never wrong. The more I listen and diagnose, the more I am believing it is the valve guides as you have indicated Oh Great Alleyoop! I agree with you KZ that when that oil pump chain gave way and I rode it for a few miles I likely burned up those seals. Ugh! I'll be ordering some new ones today. Are they difficult to replace. I have read some places that you have to heat up the head to 250 degrees before pulling them and others say you just pull them out. Anyone replaced them in the 150's recently? Also, will I cause any damage to the engine if I continue riding it until the parts arrive?

To me it sounds like bad piston rings as he is saying when the engine is cold and tries to start its starts shooting smoke but as the engine is getting hotter the rings expand and eventually the smoke stops. so it does sound like bad rings. Cold engine= contracted rings hot engine= expanded rings That's what I think That is what I was thinking. Would they be making a ticking sound?

The smoke eventually goes away.

I don't know boys! I may need some serious help here. The ticking seems to be increasing in volume with time and the blue smoke problem is much worse than a little oil in the cylinder. I can practically fill my yard with the smoke now. Please help.
