I just rode it diwn to the gas station to fill it up with some more 93 grade gas. Half a mile there and half a mile back.
Drove better than last week. Didn't die on me (good sign).
Also, the idle was lower than that. When I stopped, in the first 20 secs or so it was just below 5000 tom idled. But tjis time I stayed stopped. After tgat 20 to 30 secs it dropped down to a 2000 rpm idle.
You should also know that at full throttle it went to over 7000 rpm... leaning to 8000. Significance of that?
Still has some acceleration issues tho. Can feel lack of trust at times at full throttle.
Only thing I need now is to find out exactly which of the many screws on my carb is the air ratio screw (see pics above).
You guys are AWESOME help. I didn't solve the problem this weekend but I know more about my engine and the parts and what they look like on my scoot. Hopefully this is just a matter of too much air intake.

Oh , now I see what you pointed out. But in fact what you thought was the air/gas screw was the exposed hole where the vacuum hose had been. I sucked on the vac to get the old gas to drain out... The thing you thought was where the vac hose belonged was in fact where the fuel + fuel filter had been.

Here are two pics. Also, in the pic I showed you earlier, can you tell me which is the air/gas screw?

AlleyoopHey alleyoop, Yeah I put those hoses back on. I was in the middle of draining gas and just wanted to see which was the air ratio screw. can you tell from that pic? The idle stays at 5000 rpm, and ocassionally wants to jump up to higher...

BashanRich, I drained the gas, thanks for the help! The tank now has almost half a gallon of 93-grade unleaded. Oil is the same oil the seller gave me when i bought it, which he says is best for this scooter. And again, weirdly, the oil didnt cause problems on the 70+ mile ride from Frederick, MD to Baltimore, MD. Anyway, I'll give her a spin , now that everything is bolted back on. If it continues, I will move to the enriching idea alleyoop mentioned. Quick question: what is a good rpm amount for idling and at full speed? I ask because sometimes when i have taken her out for a spin, the rpm at idling will fluctuate (this is shortly before she conks out of course). It will rest at maybe 2000 rpm, then before I even accelerate it might suddenly rev up to 4000 or so, then go back down again, all while at a red light. Normal? Should I do an rpm/idle test for you guys? maybe that uis related to the lean issue alleyoop raised? tx again!! EDIT: Revved up and riding around the block the engine went to about 7000 rpm. Stopped at a stop light, idling, she stayed at 4500 - 5000 rpm almost always. Not sure if that is normal. Rode her around the block for 10 minutes, driving neighbors crazy probably. No breaking down, bujt was trying hard to listen for changes in engine sound. No evidence... Got better acceleration, but on one small hill it def struggled to get higher than 20 mph. Not a good sign at all.

Tx man! As for the restricter, that was removed. I hit 50 on downhill the night I bought this. And it sure felt like 50. Hey can you, rich or allwyoop tell me which screw in this close pic is the idle screw and which is air ratio screw? Alleyoop you sent that grest tutorial about adjusting carb to go more lean or rich. I'd like to test that out. Note that in this pic the fuel and vac hoses are pulled off the carb...

Also, any tips on how to get the fuel hose and vac hose off the carb? Freaking things don't wanna budge!

Update regarding smoke appearing... Here is the vid. If you look carefully you can see it emanating. Camera doesnt seem to pick it up as well as the naked eye does. Thoughts?

Also, Rich ( Bashan), I took the air filter out to see if that looked dirty. here is a couple pics: Any ideas whether it looks to be the culprit? Thanks! tom

Hey guys, great info!
Rich, I really appreciate you taking the time to ID those various lines in there! I'm gonna go ahead and drain the gas using your instructions and alleyoop's pointers.
By the way guys, I just started 'er up and on a regular idle, I saw visible, light, smoke emanating from the exhaust. pretty sure that is a good sign. I took a vid and will include it in a sec.
After I do the new gasoline test I'll try the carb adjustment alleyoop suggested.
Also, tx for the input in re the oil, guys. I'm gonna keep the pre-mix idea in mind for future reference. Now I just want to find out whether the source of this issue is "bad gasoline" or a carb air-to-gas ratio issue.

OK, I see your point, thanks man. In the morning I will try some tests to see if it is running lean, if you have ideas on a good test for that. I will try the bad gasoline test first, only bc it had been mentioned. Attached are several pics, for you and Rich ( Bashan). The first three are of the engine area with the seat storage compartment lifted off. (Note that the compartment is still technically attached through a wire thingy on the right side of the first two photos bc this scooter has a phone jack charger connected to the battery via the storage space!). The last one is one I took while trying to point the camera underneath to follow what i think are the fuel and vacuum hoses as they head up to the gas tank. Also, as alleyoop suggested, I'm including a link to the vid I took of the idling and revving, to see if "smoke" was happening anywhere... Please let me know where I should disconnect the vacuum hose so I can suck on the hose and get the fuel hose to empty the regular unleaded gas into a jar... I can try the carb/lean thing after I try that. Thanks!

Thanks for the great tutorials, Rich! I will look those over. I will also remove the storage compartment to expose the engine, etc., and will take some pics of it.
Alleyoop, thanks for the compliment! She's a beaut!
Now, as to the potential "bad gasoline" issue... I will drain the tank if that is called for, and then replace gas with 93-grade unleaded. Maybe that is all that is needed.
As for your questions about oil, I cant see smoke coming out of the exhaust when I rev, but yes I have been smelling a slight burnt smell when riding. In fact, when I left the seller's house i asked him about it and he said that some oil gets burned off in the driving process.
Anyway, you should know that the oil tank is more than 3/4 full of the same oil the seller gave me when I left his place. I don't know much, but it sounds like the oil is not the issue.
Just to be sure, I will include a video here I just took of the scooter when idled and when revving on its center stand. It is uploading now to dailymotion.com, and I will include it in the next post.
As to the lean/rich issue, I have read up on this, and now I know what it means for an engine to run "lean" or "rich." I cannot tell you which one it is if either. It ran perfectly the night I bought it, but now it conks out. I'm willing to test this out at your suggestion.
Question: What makes you think that is the issue? Also, before I plunge in and start fiddling with the carb (never done that before), is there a way for me to test it to see if indeed there is a "lean" problem?
Thank you both for your insights!! I want to sort this out before the end of the weekend, if it kills me. You're giving me great leads.
Rich, pics of the full engine are forthcoming after I get the storage compartment pulled off.
