Weather Proofing Gap In Scooter Body By straightbangin (Read 2,089 times)

Hey guys. I have found that after a couple years of neglect and my scooter seat being off or not on correctly for so long that it has warped a bit and won't fit tight on one side. Because I was always fixing it and so many things were going wrong I never put it on tight or bolted it on at all. All the tabs are lined up and in the right spot and it fits great on one side but on the other side there is a small gap as outlined with the picture and the red box where the color meets the black.



It rains very hard in FL and although I keep it covered when I'm home. I'm worried if I'm out and about and it down pours water can get down into the electricals so I was thinking of using some sort of black caulk to line this strip and then if I have to take the seat off to just peel it off and reapply after I put it back on.

What do you guys think? Is there a product you suggest for this or a better idea?

I was looking at this but I don't know. I want something rubbery that will adhere but also peel off pretty easily when needed.

Go with some decent black caulk. But just put it on only one clean and scuffed surface, cover the other side with some seran wrap. Then when you want to open it up all will be fine and come right apart. An extra piece of seran wrap over top of the main mass of it will allow you to conture it with outgetting it all over fingers.

jct842, good idea thanks.. or i could just use a strip of seran wrap....wait, that made me remember, I have black plastic vinal cling stuff that I used to put over my gas cap when I took the rear rack off. I could try a strip of that

Would some stick on foam weather stripping, from hardware store, work? It comes in different thickness and widths.

Yes that would be my call as well ,, buy a roll if peel and stick rubber foam strip cut to length,,, easy peasy baby

Well hello there young lady, glad to see you back for at least for a bit. Good that you had all that work done on the scoot and getting it up to par and running. If your not going to use it much At least start it up once a week and let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes NO lights on and it will charge up the battery and get the fluids moving through the system. That way if you feel like taking a ride it will always start up and run for you.
That is what I do with my trike I start it up and once or maybe once every two weeks and let it idle and warm up for 15-20 minutes and it is always ready to take out and ride.

Thanks guys. I was thinking weather stripping too. I guess this will be another trial and error thing
Thanks Alley I defiantly plan on doing that. Minimum is taking the scooter out every week and minimum on the jetski is every 2 weeks. Had I known I was going to get stuck trying to get the starter out ( what I thought it was ) I would have called the mechanic 6 months ago.

Now I have 2 more things to figure out which are minor but annoying.

1) is the seat won't latch. Ive tried all kinds of things but it just wont. The mechanic said i need a new latch and it usually comes in sets with an ignition assembly and gas cap (which makes sense so they are all keyed the same) but I really dont feel like spending $50 on all that. Im trying to just find the latch. I found one on ebay but its used and not so sure i want to get it. If i bought used id rather strip it off the same scooter at a used parts place or get it from someone selling a dead scooter for parts to see that its actually working.

2) i need a new headlight assembly and found one online but im having a hard time telling if mine has a cover on top of the assembly or the super hazed over and cracking plastic is actually the assembly itself and it just looks so horrible and beat that it doesnt look like its new self. Another $50 part uggg. also not super important but i may just need a new cover there and still trying to find that online.

im thinking used where i can go look at the part in person may better for these two at this point

ebay has a cool feature. I didn't see it on these two items, but keep your eye open for the MAKE OFFER button. I picked up a $105 part for my bike for $40+10 shipping. When you find your part, make an offer. You might be surprised just how little you actually have to pay for something.

I'm thinking so too but I can't find " headlight cover " or " headlight assembly cover " anywhere online.
When I do my turning signal relay I will get in there and try to look but was hoping to know before i get in there so I can order it.

I think I'll order the headlight assembly that goes to it, since I can't find a cover for it anywhere (for any chineese scooter either) i think its just so deteriorated/hazed and beat up looking that it LOOKS like a plastic cover. I'll let you guys know what I find when I get in there. It's returnable to the vendor if need be. So many parts on order for little things. My plan and goal is to install them within 24 hrs of receiving each part in the mail so I don't put this off again

gatekeeper thanks again, i ordered from both those links. my scooter is a LB50QT-6 which is the same as the Sunny Type-1.

I was joking with my mechanic about how these cheap 50cc chineese scooters have a zillion different names and the 7 yr old that produce them in china prob make up whatever name pops into their head that day. There is a little cabbage patch kid looking stamp under my scooter seat and I pointed it out to the mechanic and said that is the seal of approval one of the kids put on there with her toy stamp set. LOL. I'm so bad

I think its the same headlight and yours is just fogged over that badly.

The cabbage patch stamp is actually the Government inspector in China. You know the little slip of paper you get in your new stuff that says, Inspected by No.3....  This one means, Inspected by Cabbage Kid#3.
