Slight problem on 54B SOLVED By speedracer (Read 2,693 times)

OK here it goes. When cold starting my scoot will start right up. Idle smooth then slowly drop off until the scooter stalls. The tach will go from 2200 to 1000 real fast then drop slower until it reaches 100 rpms then stalls. Giving it throttle doesn't help at all. After it stalls it will start up and with a little throttle warm up and idle smooth. It's been doing this for several months now.

Once running it never stalls or come close to stalling. Great fuel mileage, great take off, plenty of power at high speeds, no bog at all, runs like a champ.

I have moved the vacuum line to the top nipple on the intake manifold and hooked the other vacuum lines to the bottom nipple. I thought with more vacuum it might solve the problem, but it didn't.

I'm now thinking fuel filter. When I changed all the vacuum and fuel lines I put in a Fram fuel filter that was at least twice the size of the filter which came with the scooter. Can air be in the filter causing this problem? Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Just in case I'm asked I have 1700 miles on scooter.

Hmmmmm. My scoot was having the same problem until adjusting my valves today. Runs great and idles perfect. Usually my scoot would do what yours is doing. When it was warm it would run good. When was the last time you've done your valves?
Just throwing suggestions out there ;D

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it. Prolly just the intake valve closed up.

I adjusted mine and now it starts on the first hit and idles just fine as it warms up at 25 degrees.

Perhaps it is the valves, but as a rider I don't see the problems which go with tight or loose valves. Today I took it out for a 60 mile ride and averaged between 45-60 MPH. During that entire trip I had plenty of power from take off to getting from 45 to 60. Idle at lights was perfect and smooth.

I was having problems also. Did my valves and now we're running fine. My exhaust was closed at top dead center. Couldn't stick the feeler gauge in it at all.

Well it looks like it's time to take it all apart and do a valve job. Not looking forward to removing most of the scooter to do a 5 minute job.

Also don't understand why it has all it's power and fuel mileage is getting better and better.

Any chance the enricher is shot? The only time there is a problem is when the engine is cold. Starts right up when warm or hot.

Happy Thanksgiving Doc. Miles are 1800 and I did pull out the enricher and as the engine warmed up it never moved out at all. I marked like Alley said and it stayed at the same mark. Did this test when engine was cold. I'm not sure what the enricher is doing or whether it's out or in. I just know it doesn't move at all.

This may sound silly but doing 40 MPH and then giving it full throttle it feels like the back wheel is pulling up the front. The fuel mileage has increased from the mid 60's to mid 70's now.

If you can see the Spring connected to the Plunger that means it is STUCK in the EXTENDED Position and that means you WOULD have Cold Starting Problems(NO EXTRA Fuel being feed to the Engine). If you do not see the Spring and it did not move then It is Stuck in the RETRACTED Position (BUT in that position it should be Feeding The Extra Fuel when Cold).

In either case if it did not move after you marked it, check to make sure that it is Plugged in and or the Wires where the Plug is are in place that make Contact. If all is ok then your Enricher went south and need a new one. Also as you watched it after you started the Scoot the Enricher Should get pretty Warm, if not then no juice is getting to it.

Alley the enricher does get warm at the top. When I removed it I could see no spring just the needle sticking out. Tomorrow I take a picture of the enricher and the plug I just changed. Maybe you can tell from the pictures how it is running. The plug has 1600 miles on it.

Enricher after engine was running for 4 minutes. Bad picture I know, but if you look at bottom of the needle you can see it never moved out.

The black insulator on the top of the enricher got very hot and I had to move my finger off of it. It seems to me it's shot and if you experts think so where do I order a new one from?

speedracer, it appears to me the enricher photos are swapped around. The first photo looks like the warm enricher, the second looks like the cold enricher, it does appear to be operating. I really believe your only problem is as everyone has said, adjust your valve clearances. I have had the same symptoms as you have on my wifes 54B, the valve adjustment solves it. Another thought is that the enricher turns off too soon, it gets hot but the engine has not warmed up enough. I added an off and on switch to the enricher so I can control its use. Also a fuel Primer Pump to inject a squirt of fuel into the intake valve area. This works great. But Valves still must be set correctly.

Widehide, the pictures of the enricher are in the right sequence. I only drew a mark around 3/4 of the enricher. If you look very closely at the second picture of the enricher you will see at the bottom the black marker line. I know it is blurry, but I can attest the enricher never moved at all during warm-up.

I like your setup, but I can assure you I don't have the skills of pulling it off. How does the plug look to you?

The Enricher is bad, the PLUNGER is ALREADY EXTENDED OUT and that is your problem Cold starting. The PLUNGER the thicker part of the Enricher is what moves NOT the NEEDLE. The Plunger should be Actually inside the Rubber Holder about 1/16- 1/8 and the WHOLE thing comes out about 1/4 of an inch.

So The Enricher is STUCK in the EXTENDED position and you are not getting the EXTRA Fuel for cold starting, That is Good Easy Fix(new enricher:).

The Plug is WHITE you are running VERY LEAN. Turn your Air/Fuel Mixture out at Least 2 1/2 out you may need even more.

Alley, thanks for clearing that up. I thought the needle moved. I would love to turn the A/F screw if I could get at it without removing the carb. You can't imagine how little if any room there is on the 54 B to do anything without dismantling the scooter. The GY6 was made in heaven compared to the 54B where it was produced in hell.

BUMMER! So you have one of the carbs that the Air/Fuel Mixture is UNDER the front of the Carb. You could make yourself sort of like an Allen Wrench with the end Flat to you can turn the screw without taking the carb off or Rotating it sideways.

The needle also has a spring on it but that is so that it has some give when it goes into the hole but it is the Round Plunger that actually moves.
