Hey guys,
need some help from those with a lot more experiance with Gates drive belts. Couple of days ago got my scoot all back together with a 1500rpm contra spring installed. Did'nt like the way the engine was always pulling high revs so decided to put the standard one back in.
Newly installed Gates belt was all chewed up along it's edge, thought it was my fault for putting a stronger spring in.
Put an old belt in and went for a ride, old belt was not chewed up at all. So, I whipped that off and put another new Gates belt in, went for a ride, came home and guess what? edges of the new belt are fraying, here's a pick, top belt is the one that was used with the 1500rpm spring. You can just about see how the top of the belt is curled up a bit, fraying is from the cord closest to the top of the belt.
Bottom belt is the second one that went in and the fraying is from closer to the teeth.
Also thought the belt looked a little low in the clutch, like an 835 might sit. Took belt off and measured it along with the other Gates belt, f#@* me, the belts are 820mm even though they have 842 printed on them.
You can see here how it's hardly getting up the variator,
Thought I may be going loopy so I measured the circumference of 2 old belts, an 835 and an 845. Both dead on length wise.
Here are close ups of the 835 (top) and the 842 (bottom),
Now I don't know if Gates belts have differences in the logo printing and stuff, but these 2 have subtle differences, and how the hell can a Gates belt be so out on it's measurement
I've contacted the place I bought these from and said I want a refund, wish me luck
They were from ebay though, so should I need to I can claim they are 'not as described'
I can't find any Gates PL20708 belts in the U.K., and now I'm loathed to purchase any from ebay if they are indeed knock-offs.
Anybody else come across anything like this?
I've found quite a few links to PL20708 and PL30708 belts, but they all seem to be shipped only within the States
I'll keep looking,
