GY6B Won't idle, hard to start, HELP By milanoredferrari (Read 4,268 times)

Hey guys I am new to the forum as I have bought my first scooter that I have had a problem that I just cannot figure out, I have owned a couple other scooters and cycles just never anything that gave me a real hard time. I have a 2004 CfMoto Ejewel 150cc with a GY6B i believe it's called liquid cooled motor. I cannot find anything on these motors or scooters hardly at all. Really frustrating. I have taken a bunch of pics in relation to the problems which are

This bike only has 66 miles on it according to the odometer, but not sure if the motor is original. I have never got it running right since I bought it, supposedly the scoot has been sitting in a barn for quite a few years. The scooter will start cold only with the auto choke off by spraying fuel into the hole the choke needle goes into, and then by covering it with my thumb, will crank for about 5-10 seconds while spraying then will start and will run fine (with my thumb off) as long as I apply throttle, will rev fine and run fine, and the auto choke/fuel enricher will extend as supposed to. Sometimes it will start by spraying fuel down the throat of the intake with the vacuum hose off, (then put on again) But as soon as the throttle is off, the engine dies. It is much easier to start again once warmed up. There is a open port coming off of the airbox near the carb as you can see in photos, with no obvious extra vacuum line to apply it to? So I do not know what that is there for..And I believe I have the vacuum circuit connected right. I have cleaned the gas tank out and also had the carb cleaned out and the jets at a local scooter shop. The idle screw is tightened and extended fully, and I reset the air/fuel screw to 2 1/2 turns and tried to adjust it while running to possible richen the mixture thinking it was lean and would idle that way, with no luck. It obviously has spark and has enough compression to blow my finger off the spark plug hole..The plug was WHITE when I pulled it out after running it about 10 minutes which would mean it was lean. But it seems to be getting fuel. I replaced the fuel line coming out of the silver 3 port fuel valve thing on the line and replaced it with a 1/4" line, maybe that is too big? I am totally confused on this scooter and just cannot get it to run right. Really need help and any input is very much appreciated as this was going to be my main source of transport for the summer.

Well... you have one problem. The carb is missing the enricher... this is the auto choke that starts it...

With that open I'm surprised it even runs...

Whoever cleaned the carb knows nothing about these carbs.. doubt they even opened it...

Sitting for years the gas will be varnish and the carb will be plugged...

Save yourself the grief --- replace the carb... about $35 or $40

Lots of tubes and stuff but you have it hooked-up basically correctly I think...That fuel line does not look
fuel grade (it could be) .. looks like vinyl... replace it with Tygon...

I would dump the complete air filter etc and replace it with a UNI filter or something... It looks like a plumbers nightmare...

I think your whole problem is that the wrong INTAKE MANIFOLD is on that motor. I do not see a NIPPLE to connect the VACUMM hoses to it.

After looking at the pictures, I do not see a nipple on the INTAKE to operate the Petcock first of all. That is probably why it will not run no gas is ever getting to the Carb.
There should be a hose coming from the INTAKE MANIFOLD which creates suction to operate the Petcock to allow fuel to flow to the Carb. Like this:
When you get the right INTAKE with a NIPPLE on it and connect it to the Pectcock and the ENNRICHER will work just fine.

I notice that the A line from the "T" is going someplace Where that is going to that should be connected to the INTAKE MANIFOLD.

Connect the VACUMM Lines Like in my picture and put the Enricher back on and I bet you will be pleasantly surprised. You may have to adjust the Fuel ratio screw but it will then be getting gas to the carb.

Ok well the auto choke enricher is there in the picture just disconnected, because that's the only way the engine will start is with it off and spraying fuel into its hole, and the intake manifold DOES have a vacuum port with a hose connected to it just like in your picture, Alleyoop. And if I take off the air box and replace it with a UNI filter then what do I do with the whole egr and vent hose system with its 2 ports coming out of the engine? It wont run right with those hoses off will it?

No, you can't have any vacuum leaks and the various nipples should be plugged temporarily. It is trial and error...

All that ERG stuff is crap... unless you have annual emissions inspections then you will have to keep it or be able to put it back on when they test you...

On the air box there is a big hose.. I think you have it on end for end... it should run over to the air box entrance where the carb attaches, there is a large nipple there...

So, run the hose coming off the airbox...into the nipple back on the airbox? that hose coming off the airbox I have connected to the charcoal canister outlet hose...

Also, if I clean the carb by spraying out/wiring out the passageways, what should I soak the carb in as well? Seafoam?

Seafoam no... carb cleaner...there are many brands... I use STP carb and injector cleaner...

On the hose, yea it looks like it should go there....

If you soak the carb in cleaner make sure you dont put in any of the rubber parts. It will damage/destroy them. That includes the diaphram, the float needle if it has the rubber tip, the lil gasket on the idle mix, maybe a few others I'm too tired to remember.

Well it is obvious you are not getting gas into the intake:
So here is a way to make sure the Pilot Jet passages and Main Jet passage are clean:

1. Picture one, take out the pilot jet and Main jet:



2. Get a Can of Spray Carb Cleaner it comes with a thin straw and Spary into the PILOT JET HOLE. Spray should come out by the Butterfly where the Pilot Jet holes are in this picature:


3. Spray into the Main Jet Hole and Spray should come out by were the Needle goes in:


Also Take the Entire Enricher Part OFF the Carb and Spray into the ENRICHER PASSAGEs to clear out all the passages.


Also at this time check the Float for correct Level it may also be that the Bowl is not filling up to the proper level and no gas is being sucked in due to the level of gas in the bowl is to low:




Now put the carb back on and ENRICHER and see it it is better. Once it starts adjust your Fuel Ration Screw.
Let it warm up at least 5 minutes.

You want the HIGHEST IDLE possible out of the Fuel Ratio Screw:

1.Turn the Fuel Ratio Screw Counter Clockwise 1/4 and wait 10-15 seconds to allow the engine to catch up with the new setting.
a. If the IDLE GOES up repeat 1 until the IDLE does not go up or it does nothing.
b. Then turn it 1/8 Clockwise that should be the highest IDLE you can get out of the Fuel Ratio Screw.

**** IF on the First 1/4 Turn the IDLE DOES NOT go up or does nothing THEN Turn the Screw Back 1/4 and GO TO 2.

2. Turn the Fuel Ratio Screw Clockwise 1/4 and wait 10-15 seconds to allow the engine to catch up with the new setting.
a. If the IDLE GOES up repeat 2 until the IDLE does not go up or it does nothing.
b. Then turn it 1/8 Counter Clockwise that should be the highest IDLE you can get out of the Fuel Ratio Screw.

*** IF 1 OR 2 DOES NOT CHANGE THE IDLE and since you CLEANED out the PILOT JET PASSAGES Then Take your FUEL RATIO screw out and check if you see the following parts.***

If i ditch the ERG hoses, what do I use to plug the 2 ports coming off the engine with?

Don't play with the EGR stuff until you solve the original problem. First, if I read what you're saying right, the scooter starts and runs if you spray starter fluid down the enrichener circuit. It seems to me that there's a clog between the float and the choke. Try spraying carb cleaner down into the circuit and poke into it with thin wire. If you had all these carburetor ills it wouldn't run right after it started. Don't discard your airbox, unifilters just create more problems than they solve. I've had the all the stock plumbing for three years and it works just fine. Find out why fuel isn't flowing through the enrichening circuit first. If it idles when warm, your idle jet is fine. If it runs and rides fine you don't have a vacuum leak. Put the choke back in, Try and start the scooter with your hand blocking the carb a little and see what happens. In the old days carbs had butterflies as chokes and your hand will take the place. If it starts you know that the problem is all in your enrichening circuit.
