I am here to tell ya that this is getting down right stupid.

First they have forced manufactures to put a cap or seal the air/fuel mixture screw so that customers can't adjust their air/fuel mixture. They don't care (or don't know) that different altitudes require a different setting. Not really a big deal sense the plug is not hard to get out.

Well now they have really done it. I have a customer that bought a new ATV online and can't get it to run except with the choke on at 3/4. I told him no big deal, seen it before, just bring it in and I will clean the jets. Well first off, the choke is spring loaded and you have to physically hold it in the position you want it. A pain but not the end of the world. So I get the carb off and turn it over to remove the bowl screws and got a surprise. They used tamper proof screws on the bowl. Not the type that have a special tool to remove them ( I have some of those) but the type that twist the head off when you torque the screw down on assembly, also they are recessed. So I called the place where he bought the machine and was told that was because of a EPA law and they would send us a new carb on warranty. He also said he has seen this on a couple scooters already.

So to remove the bowl, I will have to make a jig so I can put it in a drill press and squarely drill pilot holes in all three screws, then use a small easy out to remove them. Just to clean the jets. I am a bit concerned about the screw recesses in the bowl, I may have to trim down replacement screws to keep the bowl square. I can't see throwing away a carb just because it needs the jets cleaned or replaced.

Just another pain brought to us by our friendly EPA folks!

they may be willing to replace the carb now but soon as it is a day out of warr. then what. between the crapahoi gas we are forced to buy, then we can't adjust to compensate for it and the trash it absorbs. I can see the epa hitting hard on the humnmer that gets 12mpg but a small engine that in a years time is not going to use even 1/100th of the gas a suv uses. they are truly insane/

Fellas, that's just our wonderful congress, taking care of all the fools who call themselves supporters, because as we all know, we are all incapable of taking care or ourselves! (with a sneer)

Unfortunately the EPA is just another one of those special departments that are operating outside the Congress. Those folks in the EPA are writing regulations that go agaiinst things the Congress has already debated and voted no on. The EPA is going crazy with it's personal opinion of what it considers to be it's authorized power. Right now they are working on such things as regulating the amount of dust farmers can create while planting or harvesting their crops. The EPA needs to be pulled back into control or abolished.

The Congress has problems aplenty, just don't blame Congress for others ridiculous actions.

I watched an episode of Mythbuster's the other night where they tested the exhaust output of bikes and cars. They concluded that bikes had the worse overall numbers.

quite possibly worse numbers but they do not make near as much polution as a 12 mile per gal suv over a years period. comparing a scooter that is ridden two or 3 times a week for short trips against a hummer who is running for 150 miles a day 7 days a week? yea they have crap for brains. look at all the moms who drive 3 blocks to school to pick up one kid, park in line and idle 15 min till school gets out then idle back home with little bobby in the back seat of her ford explorer. she has used enough gas for a scooter to go 75 miles. and as far as pollution goes she has caused way more than that scooter does going that 75 miles on the same gas.

All of this talk we were dealing with 30 years ago in the automotive industry. Manufacturers should just put on EFI and be done with it.

If you take a scooter rip off all the emissions and then up-jet to an unknown fuel air mixture your scooter is probably running dumping at least 100 times more pollutants than an untouched scooter. Now, nobody has done that right?

Yes, cars have far more sophisticated emissions and they work. Education fellas, emissions are coming and there is no stopping it.

Plus they never fail either. Catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, hoses and all the miles of wiring will last the life of your vehicles with absolutely no maintenance. Yes! Sign me up for the next generation of emission controlled scooters.

And cars with points never failed either..... Everything fails.... I actually think the electronics are quite reliable. I have had litte trouble with any of the vehicles I have owned in the last 15 years. although I am a bit insulated from the cost of repairs myself at least on the labor side.

in most cases a scooter is used for occasional use, and for much shorter distances than a car or pickum up truck. so if the percentage of pollution is a bunch higher so what.......that same scooter would take maybe 20 years to put the same amount of pollutants in the air as 350ci gas hog does in a month of driving. efi is really great but hard to justify costing almost as much as a carbureted scooter by it self. and a sealed efi would effectively stop all mods of a scooter if thats what some want.

My 97 Plymouth Voyager is giving me fits over a BCM problem. I looked it up on the web and one guy was told BCM and it was a cruddy wire in the engine compartment. Have you looked at all the gang connectors and miles of wire under the hood? All potential trouble waiting to happen.
No thanks, as long as I can go 100,000 miles on a old bike or MY Chinese scooter the DOT, EPA and all the rest can go away.
