Carb to Manifold Hose Question. By Bashan (Read 4,073 times)

Can you use radiator hose for a carb to intake manifold hose? Or what can you use? I guess what I need to know is what is safe with a gas/air mixture. Rich

I am not sure but I don't think it will work because fuel line is made of neoprene which is resistant to fuel and won't break down. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

mt,, He isn't talking about a fuel line, It's the air intake to the carb.. In fact Bashan and I may be on the same frequency here. I'm looking at something like that for my intake hose...

I thnk he is talking about an extension from the new intake manifold to the carb because of the manifold angle, he is hain a problem getting the carb seated on the manifold. If that is the case, you do not want the hose braking down because of gas and the rubber being sucked into the cylinder through the manifold. Is this correct Rich?

Right on Bro, I'm the original paranoid when it comes to material usage. I wish I was one of those guys that didn't give a rat's arse about what they use. I was surfing the other day and read advice from a guy that said use a paper plate to make an intake manifold gasket........I had to go lay down for a while.

HA !!, I got it now.. I thought the Radiator hose was to go on the filter intake side of the carb..,, can't imagine anyone putting that hose were he did. That carb will be sucking tar shortly....Canadian Winters , lack of sun light ?..

Well, I'm with you concerning materials, especially where gas is in contact. Gasoline can be pretty "degrading" to rubber. You could probably find some high-perf radiator hose made from synthetic material impervious to gasoline to use. Also, there are several sizes of food-equipment tubing (usually transparent... HOW COOL is that?) which might be the right inside diameter for you, and, resistant to gasoline.

You DON'T want the engine sucking dissolved rubber... That "sucks" for sure! LOL!

Exactly my thoughts Leo, however, I'm about at the point with this debacle that I feel like Runningslow.....I don't care anymore. If I run a few mad scientist experiments and the inside of the engine looks like paving material, I'd almost revel in it! Fortunately I have the luxury of a backup 150cc Amore, so downtime on the Bashan is not that big of a deal. It's just driving me NUTS! I order a manifold, it doen't fit; I put on a Uni (also doesn't fit) and rejet and it barely runs; gas comes out the BACk of the carb instead of going forward. The thing is from hell! When I get some spare coin together I might order a new engine and carb and start over. The thing is, I'm dying to figure out what IS wrong. Rich

Just a suggestion, put it back to stock. You are getting too far out of whack and too many variables are coming into play. I would go back to stack and start with one change at a time so you can tweak it before making another. IMHO

I got this idea from a few guys at SD and it works well. It is hot tub hose. It is designed to be chemical resistent and other than discoloration, it seems to be holding up fine now for almost a year. the reason I did it, was it alowed me some wiggle room for my carb and intake where the rubber adapter that came with the intake was ridgid and did not alow movement. I got it at Lowes, and it was pretyt cheap. I got 2' and figure I will replace it every year just out of principle. In fact it is about time. and no, that is not my exact set up now. the pink hose is gone and the vac ports are capped and the filter extention is much shorter.

gas coming out the back of the carb could mean a stuck float.
I like Jakes setup here - that hot tub hose is inert to most chemicals- and I assume gas (I used to be in the hot tub biz) - tho I wouldn't recommend clear tubing for the vacuum line or fuel lines (don't wanna make Rich go hafta lie down again!)

Ha! Thanks for bringing me into this. For the record: I still care!

It just became a matter of economics, really. Before I had started my own teardown, I got a quote from a local mechanic who told me he'd charge about $400-600 if he had to dig into the bottom end, not including parts.

Ultimately, I think I was going to end up with a new motor anway, so I went ahead and ordered one. I hit a point during my teardown where it became a search for answers, rather than an attempt to repair it.

As far as your scoot is concerned though, a new motor might be a little too far out of line, but a new carb might be worth considering. I know you've had your share of problems, but if my memory serves me right, the bike was running ok before you went to put the unifilter on.

I'll echo what mthomas said, put it back to stock and get it running again. Create a new baseline. Then, slowly, one piece at at time, make an adjustment.

I haven't yet dealt with my carb and I know I'm going to once my new motor arrives, since I'll be using my original carb. I'm sure I'll have to clean it, since it has been sitting unused since January.... and I'll have to make all the adjustments for the new motor.

Thanks guys for your kind words and encouragement. It's true that the Bashan did run better at stock but that was after endless tinkering including carb tweaks. It was never at a point that I felt confident going on a ride of any length. It was not unusual for the bike to stall and then not start for 10 to 20 minutes; it might run OK for a while and then start bogging. I guess the manifold thing was to rule out the old plastic one and then the damn chrome thing wouldn't fit! Well you're all so nice I'm going to take pictures of what I did after stopping at Advance Auto and getting what they had that would fit. I'll post them tomorrow only if you promise not to laugh.....Ok, I will anyway. Thanks Jake & Oot, I'm off to Lowe's tomorrow to continue my Frankensteinian pusuits; stock is no longer an option....BWAH HA HA!!!! Rich

I don't know if you need an extension but the intake manifold on my Bashan from GS Motorworks was plastic at both ends and aluminum in the middle with a plastic covering. Solid as a rock. Call John at 1-888-400-3253 and see if that's what they used on their Tracers, also Bashans at one point.

Wow, What a head ache Rich !!. Hope you have it nailed finally..When you did the mod on your air filter, what hose did you use from the air filter to carb ?. I'm changing mine over, have the same new air filter (Scrappy Dog). My carb OD is 42mm so if the hose you used fit both the carb and air filter, I'll try that one !!. I ordered a reducer hose that should fit both the ID's and OD's
at the ends. That long hose you used may make it more accessable!!
