EMERGENCY GEAR/TRANSMISSION LEAK HELP! By curiousgeorge (Read 2,415 times)

So I just bought a Jonway agility 50cc yesterday and finished breaking it in today, So I changed the engine oil without a problem, then I went to change the transmission/gear oil for good measure too. So I went to loosen it and was turning it counter clockwise as hard as i could but there was no budge so i thought it might be reverse threaded so like an idiot i thought that clockwise would loosen it so i gave it a few clockwise taps and it started to loosen, so i loosened it some and the bolt starting coming out. then it kept turning and getting loose but the bolt no longer kept coming out. So i thought oh no maybe i stripped the threads, so i started turning it back counter clockwise and it came out and the transmission/engine oil drained and when the time came to put it back in i prayed it wasn't stripped but alas i was wrong. The bolt is fine, it is the threads of the transmission/gear oil drain hole that are stripped. the bolt went in and will screw till it is mesh with the metal and if you try to actually get it tight it gets loose and you have to retry. so i had it screwed in but not tightened and i filled it with gear/transmission oil and started it and waited around 3 minutes and there was no leakage so i thought it was ok, so i took it for a ride to my mall which is about ten minutes away to make sure, then when i got to my destination and touched the gear/transmission oil drain bolt, it felt wet and i wait a minute and it is now leaking transmission/gear oil about a drop a minute. it isn't like leaving a tray while i ride, but it is slowly letting a drip of oil out once a minute. Please someone help me. is there any way i can fix this, and make my transmission stop leaking.? I just bought this yesterday

:-[Sorry to hear about your problem. It's been a few years but I have used a thread repair product that worked pretty good. You coat the plug (bolt, screw, whatever) with a special no-stick compound and fill the hole with a paste that hardens rather quickly then srew the plug (bolt, screw...) into the hole until you feel it just start to tighten and then walk away and leave it alone.
It should be set the next day. The plug should then be unscrewed and should not be attached to the repair because of the special no-stick compound applied to it. The plug has been in effect the mold for the new threads. I only wish I could remember the actual name or brand for you, but as I said its been a few years since I have used it.
You should be able to find it at most automotive suppliers or Homedepot or Lowe's.

Depending on what size the thread is (M6 ?) You could drill the hole and rethread it to a larger size, then find a suitable bolt and copper washer to fit. Have you got any scoot or engineering shops near you ?

Sadly I do not, I have the guy I purchased it from but I know he won't fix it for under 75 dollars. Also I do not know what size bolt it is , and do you know where they sell tap and die sets?

all you have to do is helicoil the hole go to your auto parts store with the plug that came out of it and they can give you a helicoil to fix it very simple fix

there is no reason to drill that hole to next size.that is the wrong way to fix.the correct way is to helicoil the hole with the correct thread size thats already there. go to auto parts store and ask for a helicoil of the correct size bring the plug that came out with you.

Ok I am going to the auto parts store today to see if i can find the right helicoil kit. I really hope this will fix it. Can i still take the drain plug out to change the transmission fuel when the time comes again?

To use the same size bolt to screw into the Helicoil which is either a 6mm or 8mm you need to drill out the hole to screw in the Helicoil. I know because I have already done it to my Drain Plug. Now the other thing you can do is get a NONE METRIC same size bolt and screw that in it will re-thread since the threads in there are METRIC.

You`ve never actually fitted a helicoil have you ? As Alleyoop stated, to fit a helicoil you need to drill out the hole and rethread it so that the helicoil has something to screw into. It doesn`t simply drop into the old hole as there will be nothing there to hold it in place.
A heli is fine if you want to use the same size thread as original. If there`s enough meat around the hole then drilling, retapping and fitting a larger bolt is a lot simpler.

Ok so I fitted a helicoil with my father and we had some troubles but it worked in the end, hasn't leaked all day, although can someone tell me if this is ok please, I took it out for a ride to test it to make sure there was no more leak, and well it worked well, there was no leakage or dripping. So I rode the bike around for the rest of the day. Now I just got home and turned the bike off, there was no dripping still, but i felt the bolt and it seemed to have just a tad bit of oil on it, i couldn't tell by looking at it but when i felt it i felt a small slickness. is this bad? is the leak still there? cause it isn't dripping at all? and if it is still leaking then, what do i do now?

leave it alone if it is not dripping your going to make it worse did you put teflon pipe sealer on the plug before you put the plug back in. if you didnt then next time you drain it i would put some on before you put plug back in.

I saw this after I had done something. I went and got a rubber gasket and then put some RTV on the bolt and the gasket, Do you guys think this should help?

Yes it will help, if it still sips out a little then drain it and put in 85w-140 tranny oil. That is heavier and it will not sip out.

How will the heavier oil change how it runs ?
