So i have a 50cc scooter and it can keep up with traffic fine. I usually have it going 35-45 MPH. The problem is that my scooter is redlining if it is going anything like 30+ MPH. Since most of the time i am going 30+ my scooter is almost always red lining. Is this a problem and if so how bad is it?

What are the RPMS when you say your redlineing?
Your weights are to light is your problem,
You can bring your RPMS down just by chaning the weights.

ROLLERS= For every gram up or down your RPMS will change by 500-600.
SLIDERS= For every gram up or down your RPMS will change by 200-350.

So If right now you have 5gram weights:
And you want to drop the RPMS by 500-600
Then put in 6gram weights. If you want to drop the rpms by 1000 then put in 7gram weights.

Here is the thing, my scooter doesn't have a tach so i dont know what rpms are exactly. Maybe they make after market tachs i can put on. But the reason i say it is red lining is because if you look at the picture of my speedometer the numbers turn red at 30MPH and up. So i am not sure if this is bad for my scooter. And i don't know if this matters but when i go up a hill at full throttle my speed drops but my RPM's also change as well.

You can buy a nice tach that is quick to reponse no delay like some of the others:

SCROLL DOWN ON THE PAGE and see it working they have a VIDEO. And all you do is find a place on the instrument where you want it and stick it on then run the wire to the COIL WIRE and wrap the red part of it around the COIL WIRE and your done.

As far as the REDLINEING that is only because it is a 50cc that are sold as only going 25-30mph so you do not need a license. You can get that thing to get up to 40mph or mod it to get 40+mph(HEHE).

As far as the HILL climbing you want the RPMS NOT TO DROP JUST THE MPH and that is controlled by the CVT, weights, springs etc..

Ok i will look into that tach, if i buy it i might need a little more guidance o how to install it. Also alleyoop i have gotten mine going 50mph , but i just want to know if going that fast is bad for the small engine? And as of now, when i go up hills my rpm's do drop. Is there a good roller weight that usually is good for 50cc scooters? And also would the roller weights change my top speed?

Well your speedometer might say 50 but they are way off, so they lie a lot(HEHE).

Going that fast is not bad UNLESS the RPMS are way up the motor is ACTUALLY SCREAMING. Then what happens is you wear out the motor pretty fast and or it blows up.
What hurts motors are HIGH RPMS and getting to hot or running LEAN not enough fuel.
OIL and air is the only thing that cools the motor as you ride. So changing the oil every 1000 miles or sooner is always a good idea. It is good insurance for only a couple of bucks the motors take only 3/4 of a quart of oil. So after 3 quarts you get one oil change free(HEHE).

Yea installing the Tach is a piece of cake I have one on mine even though mine has a tach built in I Just wanted to try it.

Weights you have to experiment a little with what works on one scoot might not work on another. To many variables, power the motor makes, wheel size, weight etc..

But the first thing you need to find out is WHAT GRAM WEIGHTS your Variator has so you can then figure what gram weights you want to try. But the RPMS are important to know you want to run it within its powerband.

the reason i say it has gone fifty mph with confidence is because i have tested the accuracy on the scoot by comparing it with my dads' mini cooper. and i was keeping up and passing cars in a 45 MPH speed limit zone. Also Alleyoop I wouldn't say it is screaming but it is definitely pretty fast. and the scooter is a 2012 50cc jonway agility scooter. so how do i know what the power band is, and also do you happen to have a video on how to install the tach and do roller weights affect your top speed too?

No never 50mph on your 50 I am sorry but that is not true(for a nicer way of putting it). Yours is not even reaching real 40mph Your lucky if it is getting to 35mph. Now it may seem like its running like a bat out of hell but that is because it is a small scooter and going even 30 feels like your going much faster.

Do you realize that just about all the 50cc guys SPEND a good deal of money MODDING their scooters, putting in bigger pistons, Free flow filters, Free Flow Muffers and more JUST TO MAYBE GET THEM TO DO 40MPH.

Just so you know the ropes and what the different cc scoots can do, a 50cc is good for 30-35 and some cannot even get to 30mph, a 150cc is good for 50-55, a 250 is good for 60+.
And let may say this All the CHINA scoots the 50s, 150s,250s all of their SPEEDOMETERS are way off at LEAST 20% LESS what they are indicating on the speedo.

The power band is usually 7500 rpms on the 4 strokes 50s-150s.
Yes weights can effect Speed give you more or Less top speed it all depends on what your current weights are and rpms.
That is why I always say having a TACH is very important in order to tune your motor and or the CVT for the area you ride in. If you live in hilly country you want a different setup to be able to climb the hills and not have the scoot going 15mph up the hill. If you live in Flat country you do not need to much low end torque you go for the top end for long stretchs if you have long stretchs of road. If you live in a place where every block has a stop sign or light you really cannot use top end you probably want low end torque to get to the next block a little quicker.

Then maybe you are right about the fifty. The only reason i believed i had gone fifty is because me and my dad did a test where we down this empty road and he went thirty and i drove right next to him and my speedometer said 30 as well and so did the speedometer on the garmin gps i was using to check my speed as well. So maybe my speedo is accurate at moderate speeds but then gets out of wack at higher ones? The only few times i have gotten it to say "fifty" has been on stretches that are downhill. In areas with 40 or 45 mph speedlimit and i seemed to be keeping up
With the other cars just fine but you are probably right about the fifty then. And my area where i live is mostly open stretches with a few hills i have to go up. What would you suggest for this type of terrain?

Good because if you keep saying 50 and the 50cc guys see it they will call you out and not to nice of names(HEHE). Like I said do not believe the speedo.

You don't want to guess on the weights you will have to experiment with differenet grams to get the motor to run like you want it to at descent RPMS. It is not something that one can say put in this gram weights or that gram weights. Each motor and scooter are different some motors produce more power than others. You cana take two identical scooters and they will not run the same one will be faster than the other.

But FIRST you need to weigh your current weights then You can mark the Variator and see how high the belt is traveling. The higher it travels the more top end you get. Remember a bigger wheel will turn a smaller wheel faster.

Ok thanks for the info. How do i get to my weights to check them, where are they located? And so am I correct in saying thay when increasing your weights your tops speed will go down? Also do they make accurate speedometers I can install then? Because i believe you and that means then my scooters speedometer is wayyyyyy off and i want to fix that then.

Also what are some up grades you reccomend that will help my scooter be able to go faster ?

Unfortunatley they do not make accurate speedos and a lot of the folks get a GPS or put numbers from 1 to say 5 representing the actual mph points on the speedo. 1-10mph 2-20mph etc.. so if your going and it points between 10 and 20 you know your going about 15mph etc..
The weights are behind the VARIATOR which is part of your CVT which is behind the CVT COVER.
You will have to take the CVT Cover off and then the Variator and either buy a small digital scale or take a roller to the post office and see if they will weigh it for you in grams.
