My Helix makes an odd sound after I accelerate hard. If I do a full-acceleration and let go of the throttle I hear a deep throated chirp. Could this be a variator sound?

A chirp sound hmmm. Never heard of this sound before but it might be time to take the variator off and white grease the metal shaft and check your roller weights. If thats not the sound then think about upgrading a exhaust could have metal flaking off inside the exhaust.

When I first heard the sound, I was accelerating out of a turn and I thought it was the kickstand hitting the ground. Later, when accelerating hard away from a stop light, while traveling straight ahead, I heard the sound again.
I'll check out the variator. If I see something out of the ordinary, I'll go ahead upgrade to Dr. Pulley sliders while I am in there.

Check the exhaust gasket. I am getting a new one now. Stock on is rubber upgrade to metal.

If you check out the variator, also check the clutch area.

Sounds more like a little slipping is occurring when you hit it and the belt chirps. Alleyoop

Belt sounds plausible. I haven't had a chance to look inside. I hope to get to it this weekend.

How many miles on the belt? If it's over 10,000 you probably need one.

No idea how many miles are on it. The previous owner had it for a year without changing the belt. The scooter has 25,000 miles.

I have a 172mm engine- same as the Helix.. You can try cleaning the clutch plate, because it gets a little black stuff on it from the belt. That causes the belt to slip. I use rubbing alcohol to clean the clutch area and rag, since rubbing alcohol is fairly cheap and dries fast. We use it to clean electronics too, like tape recorders..

I finally removed my variator. The rollers are shot and one is actually cracked. I ordered a set of Dr Pulley sliders and a new variator. The ramps on my original are showing some wear. Hopefully, this will be a big improvement.
