Engine won't stay running By steelblade (Read 2,022 times)

I have a new (less than a month, and not ridden outside of the parking lot) Lancer 150 scooter. I have done most of the PDI on it, but after I changed the hose the engine will start, run for a few seconds then stall. It won't restart at that point. I have to leave it for a few hours then come back and the cycle repeats itself.

I went on to put in a new plug and gas filter, replacing the OEM ones that were in there but no change in the behavior.

There is spark, of course, otherwise it wouldn't run. I have a solar panel to keep the battery charged, no problem there. The new hoses are clear, so I can see that there is fuel going into the carb.

Anyone have this happen to them?

What hose are you talking about that you replaced and now appears to be causing the problem?
Can you take a picture of the carb area and hoses?

I can get a picture later, but it's the hoses between the tank and the carb, with the petcock between of course. Some PDI sites mention that the OEM hoses will melt from the inside out because of the alcohol in fuel here in the States.

Don't believe everything you hear, See my trike in my sig I bought that back in march of 2009 and the orginial hoses are on there as well as the original R/R, Fuel Pump, Stator and Pickup Coil, also the same Carb.

But I do use one of the best Fuel Filters to trap anything coming loose from within the hoses and or tank. If I see the Fuel Filter getting black I either put in a new one or clean the on on there out and WHOLA. Have only had to do that two times in over 4 years.

sounds like a valve adjustment is needed .

When ever it starts does it idle up nice or barely idle? If it is new it may be the ENRICHER is not connected and or some vacuum hose is off. It also could the IDLE set to low.
If it starts can you keep it running by twisting the throttle a little?

It idles fine as long as the air filter is in. I took it out to test that, and it ran worse. If I give any gas at all, it quits. Same for adjusting the idle, too much and it quits.

Another local scooter enthusiast mentioned adjusting the air on the carb but I can't find a screw for that. I'm uploading pictures under the seat now.

Ok, time to adjust the Fuel Ratio mixture on the Carb.

Here is how-to and looking at your pictures the CARB is a CVK carb and is just like the one in this procedure I wrote up.

Do I need to make it richer or leaner?

Hard to tell since it will not stay started, but to start, turn the screw clockwise until it stops then turn it counter clockwise 2 to 2 1/2 turns that is enough for the motor to start and idle. Then follow the procedure to get the highest IDLE AFTER it idles for at least 5 minutes. And the 5 minutes wait is BECAUSE when you first start a cold engine the ENRICHER(CHOKE) is feeding it extra fuel so you have to wait until it shuts off the EXTRA FUEL.

Thanks Alley. Got a busy few days, but I will likely go crawling under tomorrow or the day after.

I'm realizing that the new hoses are 1/4" but the old ones (Rewin EPS NRFL) were actually 1/8" that would stretch over 1/4" fittings. The larger hose is likely the problem, but of course these stretchy hoses don't grow on trees.

If anyone knows where I can get an actual stretchy OEM hose that would likely save me some work.

check he vac hose off the manifold , it looks dry in the pic .

I get hoses at a saw shop. They service lawn equipment and have the correct smaller hoses and some in silicon too.

Never touched that hose, still original.

When you say 'dry' (Pardon my ignorance) do you mean not sealed well enough to get a vacuum?
