Wouldn't you know it, I'm getting blue/grey exhaust right after start up. It goes away after a few seconds, but I've never had this before. Replaced rigs and piston in February. Any ideas?

burning oil at start up and going away is a sign of the valve stems leaking while sitting. Some oil sips down after it cools into the chamber and burns when you start it.

Would running your scoot for a few miles with a broken oil pump chain be enough to cause this?

Yes, the engine wasn't getting oil flow. It doesn't take long for damage to occur to the valves and/or rings. Things are moving pretty fast in there. KZ had some stats on that once, maybe he'll repost it for us. KZ, you awake there in NY yet? Anyway, is it running OK?Rich

It's simple math really. People throw out numbers like "I'm doing 7,500 rpm at a cruise and hitting 8,500 on top"
Do you know what that is? How about 7,500 rpm equals 125 piston rotations per second. The valves open and close half as much at 62.5 times per second. 8,500 rpm is a mere 142 piston spins per second with the valves operating a scant 71 times per second. A certain person told me he saw 9,000 before the blow up. Only a mere 150 rotations per second with the valves slamming 75 times per second. Did I mention that all those rotations are every second?
A little smoke at warmup? Ignore it. Once the guide heats up after a few zillion rpm in the first 15 seconds the 5cc of accumulated oil stops burning. Also since you've just rebuilt the engine a couple of times your rings might not be totally seated.

like KZ said, ignore it. its nothing. i have a few lawnmowers and a car that does it. doesnt hurt anything. just keep an eye on your oil level.

Well I was afraid of this. I think I may have put ten miles on my motor thinking I had ruined another starter clutch before I parked it.  It is starting up and idling fine. The only think I am noticing is that right after take off and just into the mid range, I am having a minor loss of power, then it picks up and is fine. At first I attributed this to the new 842 belt I installed, but now I'm wondering if maybe I had burned up the rings and needed to replace them. Penny for your thoughts. |

You're overthinking this. It will let you know when it's cooked. Just watch the oil level. The rings are done when you're laying down a smoke screen or using half a quart in 200 miles.

That is true on the splash lubrication. However, the hotter oil gets from not running down the cooling tower from the top of the valves the less efficient it becomes at lubrication. Soon the rings, and everything else, suffers....IMO. Rich

Mx matt I think they are right your rings are seating the engine needs brocken in still. I will be happy when you feel confritable with it. How is the new scooter? I can't remember what you got? I would think it's got to be close to your custody.  |

I don't know boys! I may need some serious help here. The ticking seems to be increasing in volume with time and the blue smoke problem is much worse than a little oil in the cylinder. I can practically fill my yard with the smoke now. Please help.
