So, I read on a few places (this forum included) that I should change the oil after the first 100 - 200 miles. I'm already over 200 miles, so I scooted over to Auto Zone, picked up some name brand, good quality 10W40 (NON-synthetic) oil and some 90 gear oil. I drained the oil that the scooter came with and boy... was it ever black! I was actually pretty shocked that it would be that dark after just over 200 miles. So, PHEW that I changed it.
Excited to make her sparkly clean inside and out, I went around to the other side to drain the gear oil, but was unable to get the plug screw loose. If I post pics of my gear case, can someone tell me whether or not I'm trying to unscrew the right screw? Also, how much gear oil do I put back in? None of the videos or tutorials said how much I should add back in.
Also, at the store, they had 10W40 regular oil and 10W40 4 stroke oil. What's the difference? I got the 4 stroke kind to be on the safe side, but it was a couple of bucks more. But, I'm wondering what the difference is.

No huge surprise on the oil color,as the motor "breaks in" it sheds a ton of metal as the surfaces "bed" in together,,,and also the rings are not seated yet and quite a bit of combustion gases make their way past the rings ,,,as far as the gear oil goes it should have the amount you put in cast into the case by the filler

Uh oh.....your supposed to change the oil that the bike was shipped with immediately before you ride it the first time and then again at 100 miles. The oil it's shipped with is called shipping oil and it's like peanut oil. If you don't have a bunch of smoke coming out of the exhaust then you may have dodged a bullet as far as your rings and valves. Time will tell on that issue.
Here's your fill and drain hole:
After you drain the oil stick the oil bottle in the fill hole and squirt it in until it starts dribbling out of the fill hole. Wait until it stops dribbling and put the plug back in. Your done, go ride

Bashan picture looks right on. I try to change my oil every 500 to 700 miles jon way just changed it today. It was pretty dirty. I believe that the small engines get dirty pretty fast. But you did the right thing and changed your oil as needed in break in. you should be good for a while. I am not sure when others change the oil in there scooters how many miles. Have fun and be safe.

Your done, go ride I think that I did manage to dodge that bullet (thank Gawd). It's been running really well. I finally managed to get the drain screw undone after I got done being scared that I was going to break something. HAHA The gear oil came out and I put in the gear oil I got from the store. I ran it for a bit on the stand to make sure nothing was leaking, then went out for a ride. It's probably my imagination, but it seemed to run better after I changed the oil. hehehehe

Taking care of them will help with the overall life. I need to change my gear oil in 500 miles. Just don't put a lot of force on the bolts and you shouldn't break anything.

I used to ride mini-bikes when I was a kid, my Dad made my first one, and one of the big things I noticed after an oil change was how much faster the bike ran. I've always remembered that and try to extrapolate the concept to motorcycle and scooter riding. If it affected the smaller bike that much, it has to affect the bigger bikes but maybe you don't notice it as much due to the mega horsepower. But the effect is there, it has to be. Rich

I change engine oil every 1500 miles which is about 2 months for me. I have the gear oil changed every 6 months. But I also have almost 5000 miles on mine so far. And now that it's running again, I'll probably put another 5k by the end of summer.

I could notice the difference in my 750cc and 1200cc water cooled 4 cylinder bikes. They ran smoother, quitter, cooler and had better response. So I can only imagine the difference in these little peanuts.

We call'em Mosquitoes here in the island. Mostly because of the high pitched mufflers they like to use here. Skeeter's on Steriods.
Not to start a debate here, but I noticed a major difference when I use Royal Purple in my bike. I really don't care why, just that there is a difference. Use cheap oil the first 3 or 4 changes because you are going to dump it often, then once you get it all broken in, change to the good stuff.
