We just went out for a ride, and my brother was doing his usual thing, full throttle right from cold start on his scooter (he has practically abused this thing like that since he got it. It had like 600 400 miles on it when he got it and he never let up on the throttle), and then all of a sudden he is blowing SMOKE out his tailpipe! Whoops! He's burning oil now!

There's an object lesson here for you. If you flog on a cold motor it will blow up. It takes a bit for oil to get to all the moving parts. I also went into the math previously. Take any RPM and divide it by 60 to get revs per second and then divide that number by two to get valve actuation figures. 6000 RPM is 100 piston strokes per second. The valves open and close 50 times per second. That's PER SECOND. Try and picture anything moving 100 times per second. If your brother was wringing the engine out to 7500 or 8,000 RPM, Well, I leave you to do the math.

Correction, it had 400 miles on it when he got it. He has abused it quite hard..he almost deserves it!! I broke my motor in quite lightly, and always let it warm up, or be very gentle on the throttle for a bit, and mine is doing great. Although I'm quite hard on it now. At some point when going down a long enough hill my motor stops sounding like a motor and more like a giant sine wave. At that speed, there must be at least 10-11k going on in there! Of course I let it warm up real well before abusing it like that!

Get a Tiny Tach or one like it, you'll be surprised what's going on in there. Tiny Tachs are expensive but bulletproof. They sell other similar units on Ebay and Amazon much cheaper and they do RPMs just as well. I doubt your touching 11K but the tach will tell the tale. Rich

No, but he is going to have to deal with being one if he has any intention of using this bike much longer.

We were on our way out for a ride tonight. And as usual my brothers bike was burning oil. So I told him before we left that he should check his oil levels. He said he didn't want to, so I checked for him. HIS OIL WAS ONLY 1/4 UP ON THE DIPSTICK HOLY SMOKES. He's gonna seize this engine before he knows it..did I mention that he hasn't changed the oil since he put it away in the spring, and his last oil change before he put it away had 300 miles on it! Dear lord! He still hasn't changed it!

These engines use the oil as one of the cooling mechanisms. It's pumped up to the top and then drains down the cooling tower as I call it. It's the tunnel that runs from the head to case. That's why there's all those cooling fins on the left side of the cylinder. You let the oil get low and you dramatically reduce the volume of coolant to carry heat to the fins. Rich

My bike is MINE to take care of. Mine has over 3k on it and is running strong. I almost hope his scooter locks up soon so that it teaches him a lesson in taking care of his stuff! If he breaks this, he wants to buy my Dad's Ruckus...he'll probably break that too! And before you know it, he will be breaking my Dad's 150cc bike too because he ran out of bikes to ride!
