No joke. I learned my lesson in 1976. I rode my 500 Kawasaki to Laconia without one. 800 miles of bugs and wind. I came home tired and coated with mosquitoes. Before the summer was out I had a handlebar fairing on it. It was never an interstate tourer but it was worlds better after that.

If you do choose to paint, I've used the Krylon paint with UV clear coat on a couple helmets and the lower half of a motorcycle wind screen, it is pretty tuff and easy to clean up blemishes. I think I would us Plasti Dip on the inside of a light weight wind screen.

If I coat a new windscreen with the UV coating, is it going to affect it? How badly will it distort any light coming thru? Or does it dry 100% clear?

I've never used it on clear plastic so, the testing will have to be left up to you. Try it some where out of the normal viewing area first. But I think orange peel or runs could be an issue.
