i didn't even have to go there to know what this is all about,,,i joined modern vespa before i joined here,,,,i don't go there even for reference material,,,too snooty for my taste,,,i could buy a $1200 china scoot,,do $2000 in mods still have money in my pocket ,,and thats their "entry level" bike ,,,the china scoot would have a hand built fully balanced and blueprinted mill,with keihin or mikuni carburation,,,suspension work,,,it would eat a vespa alive,,,when i get done with the stella we'll see what a hand built scooter can do besides wheelie,,,,

Basically one of the guys from Scoot Dawg went there and asked what the big difference was between a Vespa and a China scoot. Some people were nice and answered factually. Some were drooling class thugs who couldn't wait to trash China scoots and the people who ride them.

What I find so amusing is that the self-righteousness is really just jealousy...or annoyance that people are actually enjoying scootering without paying the kind of freight those people did. Right away they equated Vespa with Harley. Did you notice that absolutely no one addressed my comments. I must be a big, fat liar trying to tell them that I have 21,000 combined miles on my Chinese crap.

Yeah i noticed it too and when i mentioned the elitism and said the vespas are just like anything else ,,,,just a pile of nuts and bolts that need repair just like anything else ,,the uproar was crazy,,,and on MV they grade you ,,,did you know that?,,,i got a note saying i had bad kharma and my approval rating was very low and get with the program,,,i promptly asked to be removed from the forum but you can't "quit" ,,,so i just abandoned it,,,but when i requested to be removed you should have seen the replies i got ,,,holy smokes,,,you would have thought i was a heretic of the highest order,,,how dare i want to leave the best forum on the net,,,i've always had a mind that when the authorities are telling me how cool it is,,,,,it ain't

I feel like the only person in the world that thinks like this but I just don't get it. Every time I read about Cycle World doing an extended Road Test on an Italian bike it reads like a nightmare. Engine problems, electrical issues and drive train troubles pop up. I could tell you tales from my biking days about Italian bikes. In the mid seventies there would be just as many Moto Guzzis at events as BMWs. No more. Bad bikes and disappearing distributors made them as common as Luke on a Roketa.

I'm not stupid. I've lurked plenty of times at Modern Vespa. Those things aren't trouble free. Seriously, some Brit snapped the end off his cam revving the stuff out of 250 Vespa. How is that better than Chinese? This much I will give them. I won't run my 150cc over 45 mph. It's happy there and runs all day at that speed. A Vespa 150 will do 60 mph all day and smile. So for $3500 more you get 15 extra mph? A 250 China scoot will do 60 mph all day happily, but costs-What?- $2000? I'm not seeing anything that tells me a 150cc Vespa will outlast, outrun or do anything better for the $5000 buy in. That's not even covering $7000 300cc Vespas. I could have an FZ-07 Yamaha for less and live happily ever after.

The arrogance is both unjustified and undeserved. Except that they have more money to throw around on their toys, they're no different than we are.

We could beat this drum until we broke the sticks,,, people want what they want,, let them,,, if they think the V brand is superior good for them,,, the 150 piaggio fly is faster, better mpg, great brakes, and a little better than half the price ,, made by the same company no less,, people want the name ,, lots of people buy with their hearts and not with the head,,, if they have the dough good for them,,,, I'm already hearing the jibes " should have bought a Vespa instead of the Stella" geez I could care less,, nothing but good reviews ( except for funky switchgear and crank bearings on early models and genuine just put in new engines without hesitation) about the machine ,, and easily repaired when something does eventually breaks or wears out,,, inexpensively ,, what am I missing?

Ready for this? The Fly 150 isn't even made in Italy. From 2008 on it was built by Zongshen in China with Vespa motors built in Taiwan for a couple of years. Now the officials are being Mum about where it's being built. Many are certain it's being built wholly in Vietnam. Yet the Vespa faithful accept it as their own.
