Title pretty much says it all. I figured I'd replace the stock variator, as that's something I hear can improve the ride, while not having to do anything else. I bought a Koso variator with 12g weights. My stock had either 12.5g or 13g I forgot. After replacing it (I replaced the belt as well), I get this really loud clanking/rattling sound on acceleration that immediately stops when I let go of the throttle. I imagine this isn't normal. In addition to that, it feels a little sluggish on the takeoff, although my midrange accel have improved quite a bit. I was able to squeeze another 5mph on the top end too.
Any suggestions on what I should do next?
Thanks all!

sounds like you variator nut came loose and now the fan pulley is hitting the cvt cover in the inside. Alleyoop

It makes the same sound when I run it without the cover.

Does it make that sound WITH the cover on?

Yes Bashan, it makes the sound whether or not I have to cover on or off. It only makes the sound when i'm giving it the gas, and immediately stops when I let off the gas.

Hmmmm...first thing I would think of...if you installed sliders they're in wrong, if you installed rollers one is cockeyed. Pull the outer pulley and see if things look hinky with the weights. Second, you sure it's the right belt? Third, a tensioner arm is loose in the clutch, pull the bell and look around.

Well you should be able to tell with the cvt cover off where the rattling is coming from the Variator or the Clutch. Also are you sure you got the right size weights for that variator. If the weights are to small they will make a racket bouncing in there. Or you just put the variator in wrong and the weights got out of position.
If you can't find the it put up a VIDEO of the cvt working and you giving it throttle. Alleyoop

-Clutch is fine, no sound coming from it. -Weights are stock Koso weights. -Belt is the exact same. -Fairly certain I put the variator on correct.

Did you clamp the whole thing together while re-installing it? If you don't, stuff flys apart inside and you have to take it apart and do it again. Silly springs you know...

Guitarman are you talking about the clutch? I never too that apart. I took the fan, belt, and variator off, put a new variator and belt on, then put the fan on. Eveything is where it should be. That's why this whole thing is so confusing.

Did you put the plastic guides on the Variator that slide up and down on the Variator metal guides. There are usually 3 plastic guides if you did not put those on you will get a metal to metal racket. Alleyoop

Yep, they're on there. And in fact, my old variator didn't have those ( I had 2, somehow lost one, so I took them all off.) and the old one was way quieter!

People have to do something it is not going to get fixed by itself. If you don't do anything then live with what you did wrong until it really destroys something else and now it does not run anymore. FIX ME NOW OR PAY A LOT MORE LATER
