well recently I got a free 1980 CM400A 9k miles with (auto transmission??? Huh?) well I tried to start it and no go I changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, fuel, and cleaned the carb the hell out of it because the jets got clogged because it was sitting for about 4 years outside just rotting away. Anyways I did got it started for once and idled just perfectly but when I turned it off it wouldn't start again at all. I tried to test my coild and not sure of I did it right as I set the multimeter to 200 ohms setting I get 02.6 ohms in small wire that powers the coil and then set to 20k ohms on the spark plug wires with cap removed ofcourse I get nothing the number doesn't change it just says 1 :S can the coild be bad?

I have done a few long left out side bikes and it pays to get a small wire brush like a toothbrush size and a small file,,, tiny like a jewelers file and som 320-400 sand paper and go over every connection ,,, even if it looks good,, and check grounds as well,,, you may find your problem will disappear ,,, and I do mean every connection

the connector for the coil has its own ground connected to the cdi and I what i wanted to know is if the ohms test is normal?

If it fired the first time my money is on intermittent connections ,,, go thru all your connections and I'm sure you'll have success,,, oh and congratulations on a good score,,,

You should get very little resistance off of the primary coil which is between the two connections on the back of the coil.....maybe 1 ohm:
The secondary should give you more, around 7 to 9K ohms I would think. Now, I'm just guessing based on scooters, but much off of that would be a problem I think. I'd swap the coil. Rich

well as I mentioned on the first post the secondary doesn't give any reading and the primary says now 03.6 ohms O.o

The secondary is burnt, you should get something. Replace the coil.

Well After intensive searches and testing I got nowhere so I just went to autozone and bought a repair manual and it seems I was doing the test wrong Now it shows 7.6k resistance on the coil which is in good shape. I probably should of mentioned that the coil has 2 spark plug cables in just the 1 coil and to check resistance you must check in spark plug cable to cable :S and now I have readings!

The primary reading in the pix above is normally between 3 and 5 for a regular motorcycle. The secondary should be lower than 20.
These readings are for a regular motorcycle coil, (Honda, Zook, Yammer) I don't have the specs for 250cc or less but I would think it shouldn't be that much different.
