At the time our club president was a giant of a man, about 6'10" and over 300 pounds. He walked up to one of the members at the event with a can of beer in his hand. This member was noted for lack of restraint around alcohol, was no spring chicken and should have known better. The President said to him, "Can I see your beer for a minute?" The guy handed it over without question. The Prez dropped it on the ground and stomped on it flattening it in the process with the beer spraying out. "We have too far to ride home for you to be screwing around. Don't let me see this again." The guy drank soda for the rest of the day. The only thing, in my opinion, that makes this kind of action acceptable is that it is the club president, and you state that the member was noted for lack of restraint around alcohol. That is the whole purpose of a club president, sgt of arms, or ride captain. It is their job to make the ride safe for everyone. Anytime I go on a run with a group, I take my cues from the ride captain. If the group isn't drinking, neither am I. And if I'm on a courtesy ride with them, I ride in the back, even if I think they are moving too slow for my taste. It's about respect.

Respect is you ask first, obviously this person wasn't thinking, not condoning his actions but just because you're that big doesn't give one the right to push people around.
When I was a second grader I had a 4th grade bully want to push me around, came home one day with a black eye from it. My grandpa asked why, told him and then he gave me a lesson I'll never forget. He told me to pick up a stick or rock and work this bully over, I cried that's not fair grandpa! He let me know that when a bully 4th grader was picking on me there was no such thing as a fair fight.
Two days later the kid came at me again and I picked up a branch that had fell from a tree and with all his buddies and my classmates watching I beat the snot out of him with that branch, was worth ever lick the teacher gave me, bottom line is he left me alone and I've lived by that principal ever since. Bigger than me, push me around? I'll find a branch.

Oh, I agree, JR. Bigger, stronger doesn't make right. And doesn't grant the right to act in an uncivilized manner. Also doesn't mean that someone smaller and more cunning can't totally whip one's arse. Personally, I would have quietly chatted with the member and let him know that I'd prefer that he not drink at that time, unless I'd already had other occurrences of the same type and felt that a public message had to be sent. Sadly, some people you simply can't reason with, without it deteriorating to a shouting match, and beyond.

Ditto on JR's sentiments. And does bring me to another thing. I believe that a rider has the right to determine his own riding state, but hate it when I see 'em screaming down the road with a passenger, especially a child, helmetless, and jacketless on the back of the scoot. Not applicable in this case, since they were married and in their 50's. I would guess that they had been riding for at least a few years.. Still, always sad to loose riders.
