While I'm thinking about it, there is a light on my temp gauge, the little sailboat looking symbol. What is that for? It identifies the function of that particular gauge. In this case it tells you it is a coolant temp gauge. As far as being lit, I'd bet it is the gauge, or panel light bulb that is illuminating the little symbol. You'll probably find it is on even when the engine is not running, if the lights (head, tail, dash) are turned on. Sounds like you have it all worked out now though.
