Most of the pedestrian two strokes of the seventies ran pretty low compression and had lower combustion temperatures than a typical four stroke. I'm betting that cheap repair would have lasted a while, especially when the carbon built up to iron thick on the piston head. That's a pretty ingenious repair but you have to wonder how he holed the piston originally? Probably using an over hot plug he scrounged from somewhere instead of paying for it.
