So i've been having intermittent starting problem. I changed the carb and had the same problem...
So I went to check the plug and it looked worn but not too bad "2013" bike
I got the bike non-running so I assume its been ran for half of its manufacture life.
Anyway, I pulled the plug and cleaned it.
No start since then.
After checking everything i'm assuming weak or no spark is the issue so I pulled the plug, but put it in the plug boot and began to try to start it in search of a spark.
Normally when I do this test I touch the threaded or electrode to metal and I see a spark jump the electrode gap..
However, I see no spark, but when I remove the plug from metal slightly I see a spark from the metal to the plug.
Is my plug bad?

Yes your plug is bad and the spark is jumping from the metal part of the plug to motor.

One of the best cheep tools for you tool box is a spark tester about 5 bucks at a auto store. take out spark plug connect tester to plug which isn't in head, it has a clip which clips the a ground leave spark plug wire on you crank engine you should see spark jumping from center electrode

Also, get yourself a gap tool. Can't change plugs without one. .50 cents to $1 at most parts stores.

Those spark plug testers are not all that great especially in this case the plug is cracked on the inside and the spark is not reaching the electrode so it is grounding out on the head of the motor. The testers only test voltage getting to the spark plug but not through it. So it is better to just take the plug out and put the boot cap on it and hold it to the head and see if it firing. Alleyoop

But do you know the wire cap rubber boot my have unscrew form the spark plug wire. The wire is not one piece with boot it may have been partially undone and when you change plug came away from wire. Look pull plug hold wire with one hand and with other had try screw boot back on if you cant that's another story. It may have separate just enough to give very week spark. Maybe someone here may explain what I'm trying to say.

Yes your correct crwford that is one possibility of a no spark or weak spark and there are many others so some looking and testing is in order. Here are the most common no spark problems that could happen:
A no spark or weak spark can be many things, Bad ground, the boot cap screws into the coil wire and could have pulled out some and not making good contact like crwford mentioned, the boot cap clips inside could be broken and not grabbing the plug tip good, the coil wire is actually bad, the coil itself is bad, the plug is cracked inside, the gap on the plug is to wide and or to closed, the Cdi, the Pickup Coil, the killswitch on the handlebar and or sidestand is grounding out the cdi and even the stator. So you naturally want to start off with the easy stuff first because some of the things you need a Multi Meter to test. Alleyoop

The new plug wires sux. They have some sort of plastic conductor inside instead of a nice piece of wire. And if they come out of alignment with themselves, you can't get a decent spark. Had 3 wires all give me trouble so I changed to a length of speaker wire and BAM! Massive spark.

Got rid of the bike already, but it wasn't difficult to make. Slid the boots on and mounted the connectors. I had taken them from one of the other wires. I used to do connections like that all the time. And this is not any 'ole speaker wire. I'm talking 12 gauge insulated and shielded cable, the kind used by bands on stage.

Why not just but an ngk wire? I've never had a problem with those
