Thanks. As a side note, today I learned the hard way that I need to drain the motor oil before opening the CVT. Oil spilled on my floor as I opened the CVT. That's why there is kitty litter in the photo. I'm assuming that modern scooters do not require an oil drain before opening the CVT?

WHAT!! no you either took off the Tranny drain screw by mistake or you have a OIL SEAL LEAK. The CVT is DRY otherwise just think about it the belt would slip like crazy. So I would bet you took the WRONG SCREW at the back by the CLUTCH thinking it was one of the SCREWS holding the CVT COVER. Alleyoop So now you need to take a picture by the CLUTCH with the CVT cover off so we can point out the Tranny FILL SCREW and DRAIN SCREW for you. The Drain screw will be under the CLUTCH on the motor case. Alleyoop CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO SEE WHERE THE DRAIN SCREW WILL BE I LABLED WHERE THE SCREW WILL BE.

No worries, Alley. It is definitely motor oil. This is a 1988 scooter with the oil level window connected to the CVT housing. When the oil came out, the oil level became zero. After I changed the belt and replaced the CVT housing, I added a quart of motor oil, and the level was perfect again. The oil chamber is located at the bottom of the CVT, so the CVT did not get flooded with oil.
It is impossible to open this scooter's CVT without opening the oil chamber.

Here is someone else's photo of the same scooter that I have. Notice the motor oil chamber at the bottom of the CVT. It is impossible to open the CVT without draining the motor oil.....

Also, I know where the gear oil screw is because I replace the gear oil months ago. It is no where near the CVT. It is at the rear of the scooter.

Here's the same CVT cover that I have. Notice the oil level window and oil filler plug near the bottom. The window comes off with the cover, which causes motor oil to drain. The window has an oil ring which prevents leakage when mounted.

Alley, the other person's photo is with the variators removed!
And I cannot take another photo of my CVT because I already replaced the belt and replaced the cover.

No problemo. Here is a photo of MY scooter I took 2 minutes ago. Notice the oil level window at the bottom of the CVT cover, and the oil fill cap above it. You can see the beautiful clear motor oil in the window.

As you can imagine, I look forward to buying a modern scooter someday because they are designed better.
But I still love my Riva!

Removing my CVT cover was a pain in the butt because the footboard blocks the CVT cover. This is another reason I am looking forward to getting a modern scooter that has nothing obstructing the CVT cover.

Yes I can understand why my local Yamaha dealer REFUSED to work on my scooter. They said they only work on modern scooters.
