I started her up this evening just before the rain began to pelt us. She started up quick and strong BUT, I'm pretty sure that I am hearing what I have seen mentioned in many posts here, "Variator rollers", rattling. I had figured that with no maintenance done on this that it would be needing rollers and a belt. It did take some revving up before the rear wheel began to spin (indication of light rollers and possibly idle speed adjustment out?) I have read some preferences toward "Gates" and "Bando" belts. I have no idea yet, what SPECS and sizes for either but I'd like to choose for best top speed since, I'll need to hop on the HWY but not a FWY to my sisters house. She does have one pretty steep 1/8 mile hill that I'll need to climb to get to her though. It looks like I'll be into the variator cover tomorrow if the rain subsides. I have a scale so, I can weigh the rollers once I am able to get to them but, I'm sure I'll find many worn spots on them. I may have to rig a way to hold the variator fan without buying special tools right away too. I'll dig for an oil filter wrench and my manual impact driver. The previous owner said the kick Starter didn't work so, I'll be checking that out too. Any suggestions on any of this is surely welcome. I will of course be cruising the threads, edumacating meself !

Your doing just great, as for the belt size see what is in there now. Also a belt at idle should be DOWN in the Variator and ALMOST to the edge of the clutch pulley. IF the belt is DOWN in the clutch pulley at IDLE wheel not turning then several things could be the problem. 1. The belt is NOT DOWN in the VARIATOR and is already up on the variator and pulling the belt down in the clutch pulley. (variator is not retracting all the way, weights out of position). 2. The belt is the WRONG SIZE to small. WRONG SIZE BELT ON THIS SCOOT: CLICK ON THE PIC TO SEE WHAT I WROTE

Gee, sanks! It looks like I'll have the chance today, in an hour or so. Wet clouds are playing "Peek-a-boo" but I think, they are outnumbered by poofy, happier ones! Thank you! I'll report my findings and shoot pertinent pics as soon as I get in there

So, obviously, I'll have to do a lot of cleaning before I can even begin to assess the condition of anything in here. I'm watching a few vids right now on servicing these components. Any suggestions on what is best to clean this case and parts with? I think I have denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, industrial de-greaser, maybe some brake and/or carb cleaner.

The belt is not to bad really probably 1/2mm down from it's 20mm width. I think the problem is the weights in the variator. The belt is sitting in the pulleys really well.
So if you already have a new belt you can use that one as a spare carry it with you in the trunk.
Now The gasket around the CVT is usless really they rip when taking the cvt cover off. So most of us jet rip the rest off and do without a gasket they really do not do anything.
Now to clean the dust out I would FIRST ATTACK it with AIR you can buy COMPRESSED AIR IN A CAN like they use on the PC's. If you go at it with some liquid you are going to have a MUD MESS and will take you longer to clean it out. But you can use carb carb cleaner Degreaser etc.. and a lot of paper towels. Alleyoop

Yes, I was surprised to assess that the belt was sitting well ( according to your posted info before). I don't have another belt but, will probably get one just to be sure that I'm good . Ok, on the compressed air. I saw a tank type setup at Harbor Freight last week, maybe it's time for that, with a coupon I will try a dry chip brush for the time being. I'll go out to clean it up a bit now to see if I can get some clearer pics in there. Thanks again, Alleyoop !

Here is what the rest should look like. It seems may be the 2nd gear that is out of position OR the actual GEAR ON THE DRIVE SHAFT is not being engaged. So You will need to take the Variator off and then we can see why the kickstarter is not turning rthe Crank Shaft. Alleyoop The way it works is when you push the kick starter down the BIG GEAR#2 MOVES OUT and engages the gear on the CRANKSHAFT. The #2 gear should be BEHIND the SMALL GEAR on the CRANKSHAFT.

I just added a 7th pic to the post, was able to get my lens back there. I was able to get an eyeball on that first gear for now, and it is sitting in front of the second gear. So far, my untrained eye doesn't see anything obvious. Yes, my next trick will be to get that variator off. I may try a 2x4 piece of wood, a hole saw for access to the nut and drill holes to put some holders for the slots on the variator fan

OK maybe you can try putting the kick starter on the shaft temp and pushing it in and down and see if the gears mesh.
What actually happens when you push the KICK STARTER DOWN? It maybe the gear on the crankshaft is out to far and or it is rotating on the shaft and not grabbing the shaft. That gear is just pressed on and the shaft is angled getting thicker toward the casing. Maybe the gear just move out and needs to be pushed back some. Alleyoop

Ive been out there trying to get that variator bolt off, lol! Good grief! A friend has an impact drill but, wont be able to be by till Friday or Saturday . I'm going to call it a night (Havent eaten today, yet). Tomorrow, with good light (Working in miserable light, on my patio. 2 drop lights, STILL not good light) I'll check on those gears. I had never tried kickstarting it myself since, he said it wasn't working and I wanted to get my eyes on the gears first. Thank you, Alleyoop !

Look at Gear #2 on yours, yours looks like it is out of alignment. But the way it is out of alignment should still move the crank maybe not enough but still mesh with the crank gear. So if when you kick it does it actually turn the motor over AT LEAST SOME or none at all. If none at all the it is not meshing with the crank gear.
