I'm a hopeless tinkerer. I would like to keep messing with my tao tao atm50. So far I have replaced the stock carb, replaced the broken airbox with a pod filter, went up to an 85 jet and replaced the rear tire. What should I do next? If I was to do a bbk should I just do the 47mm? Should I keep the engine as is and replace the variator? Clutch springs?

The easy answer is "leave well enough alone and ride that sucker"
I love to work on things as much as I like riding them. I could find another junk scooter and start over but I don't want to keep explaining to the missus why more stuff keeps showing up in our garage.

Rookies say that because they do not set them up right they rod the crap out of them running them lean then blame the parts when they blow the motor.

I'm pretty much a rookie. Do I get a larger intake & carb or do I just upjet?

All you need to do is upjet, if 50bbk you will need a main jet in the 90s and you can up jet the pilot to a 33. You want to be on the rich side on the MAIN JET at first then work down.

I love riding it as is but I know there is room for improvement. I had a chance to get a 79 Yamaha dt125 that needed work but the guy didn't have the title so I passed I also saw a honda express for a really great price but I'm just too dang heavy for those so my summer project will continue to be futzing with my tao tao. That sounds dirtier than it really is.

Does valve length matter if I'm replacing the head too?

Yes, because if you get the wrong one the ROCKER assembly will have to change as well.

Some places say you have to bore your case for a 50mm. Is that true?
I really don't NEED 80cc...but if I can do it I may as well. I can totally live with a 47mm kit.

ok. I was in the neighborhood so I ran by one of the more reputable scooter shops in town and got a 47mm bbk. is it worth it to get a performance camshaft like Scrappy's a9?

The 52mm bbk requires the case to be bored but not the 50cc bbk which comes out to be 81.+cc, the 47bbk comes out to be a 71.+cc. Most go with the 47 bbk for reliablity.

The A9 cam will allow for higher revs which in turn means little more top end speed. With the 47 and A9 it should get to a real 40mph.

I got the kit on today. In hindsight I should have removed the engine because it's kind of a nucklebuster on the bike. Everything went on ok as far as I can tell. I started it up and took off like a rocketship. There are too many stops to really go WOT but I will check top speed when I get it broken in. One thing I noticed is that the bike is louder. it could be I screwed up putting on the gasket but I dunno. I am not a fan of loud pipes. So far I am pleased with my choice. I ordered 4.5gram weights but I am thinking I don't need them. I take off just fine with 6g sliders
