I can't tell you how many times I've seen this over there. The 300cc versions seem to be free of the problem so far but the 200 and 250cc Vespas seem to do this quite regularly on the ones ridden for extended speed. There were two engines with the exact issue, broken valve destroying the top end, in the old scooter warehouse in Jacksonville a few years ago. One was a scooter I sold to a friend, so not an unusual issue with these. Not unusual? It must be nice to have money. modernvespa.com/forum/topic152268

Yep,, couple three things could cause this,,, valves not made correctly and were too hard ( brittle) weak valve spring and the piston touched it,,just because you spend abunch of dough doesn't mean trouble free,, and also these guys were all running at or near redline for extended times,,, after all they are only 250cc's,,, I wouldn't run mydr350 at redline for any kind of extended period,,,, im never near it,,,

As a side note and not a dig at the Vespa owners,, if you cruise the internet this is very common ,, must be close to 25-30% of total sales end this way ,, I've seen more than a few on CL for sale that " don't run",,, same symptoms,, riding with sudden shut off,, I probably wouldn't take one for free,, totally happy with my lowly Stella ,,,

Here's my thing with that Pete. How many times do you see or hear of this problem with Japanese or even Chinese scooters. Yes, it happens, but in all my years on China scoot forums I haven't heard it a lot. Go that further. How many bikes do you hear dropping valves and they get flogged mercilessly.
Japanese scooters are almost bullet proof in the engine side. Yes, clutches and variators fail but not the engines. My 1991 Nighthawk could be ridden at 250 Vespa speed trouble free. I only chuckle because the Pasta crowd will tell you how great their rides are even as they fall apart under them. An opinion I keep to myself over there. It makes it easier to gather data.

I was a pariah over on mv,,,because of the Stella,,,,talk about disrespect scheesh,,,,that's why I never go there any more,,too snooty for my blood,,,and half of them don't even realize their engines are made in Taiwan and China too,,,the way Chinese scoots and motorcycles are progressing quality wise it won't be long before the vaunted Vespa brand is hit hard,,,I couldn't wait to get rid of mine and am thrilled with the Stella no matter what those guys say over on mv

Vespa may sell a few scoots a year to the well heeled but the Chinese and Taiwan sellers are starting to pull the rug out from under them. 50cc scoots are the bulk of the market for scooters and the Asian sellers are taking that market over. The Japanese own the big scooter market over 400cc. I don't know how many 150cc Vespas at five grand will sell in the face of SMax and PCX scooters running them over. Not to mention 200cc scooters for less from Kymco and SYM.
Especially when the reliability is questionable on all Vespas.

I suspect a bit of censoring going on over there, I'm not watching that closely.

I'm not watching closely either,,,I got snubbed on mv more than once ,,,that was enough for me so I bailed out,,,the only time I go there is when someone provides a link to a post or article ,,,and I also agree with the smax and other brands coming on very strongly,,,hard to beat a very high quality Scoot with excellent build quality for less money,,,the only thing I see is the Italian style,,,which is very good , but style isn't worth anything if the bike breaks catastrophically and is serious money to repair,,,don't get me wrong I'm not firmly set in the Chinese scooter camp yet,,I wouldn't take a pre 08 anything as a gift ,,,but quality is steadily getting much better

It could be that posts/threads move quick. I made a mistake on roller weight on a gts and man did I get clobbered. Bad karma, a reminder across my screen. My banner in my signature was frowned upon. Then I started to help others, things improved. Seems like the guys that answer the phones at the dealers are posting there. Every thread there is someone that encourages posters to bring it to the dealer or only use OEM parts. and so on.............
