I have a 2017 TaoTao Quantum Tour that has the 150cc GY6 engine. I was having no issues at all with the engine but I changed the variator and weights from the stock 13gram to 14gram Dr. Pulley sliders and suddenly I have a very erratic idle which will last for a few seconds and then die. I have checked the valves and those are within specs for this motor. I have noticed that when I start it, I have to apply some throttle then let off of it. I am stumped at this point since there were no issues at all until I changed the variator. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In the time that I made the original post, I have indeed resolved my problem. It was hot today so I had to keep coming inside to cool off. But as I was working on my scooter and examining everything, it clicked to me to check the carburetor so I did in fact remove it and unseal it (sealed chinese carb) and checked to make sure everything was fine. As I was reinstalling the carburetor, I noticed a leak in the intake manifold via a crack in the rubber. I know that I really need to replace it but as a temporary fix, I wrapped some electrical tape around it a couple of times and put the clamp back over it. It's always the little things that seem so obvious but are easily overlooked.

It was just odd that it happened right as I changed the variator. I guess it goes to show that whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong and can happen at any time. Just as I had major difficulty in removing the variator nut even with a 1/2 inch impact gun with a 17mm impact socket at the shop where I work. It simply would not come off at all, no matter what I tried. I eventually had to resort to cutting it off with a die grinder as close as possible to the threads without damaging them. I did replace it with a similar nut with the correct threads. My next mod for this little scoot will be a performance clutch and kevlar belt. Maybe a new carb as well while I save up for the performance muffler.
