I placed my timing light on my bike only to find the timing is retarded. I adjusted the "base" screw and found all I can adjust is the point gap. I cannot advance nor retard the timing. The gap is set to .014. Closing or opening the gap did not increase/decrease the timing. I removed the flywheel and found the Point Cam Lubricating Pad was not touching the cam surface. The surface is only slightly discolored and not worn. I adjusted the pad and lubed it up. The cam follower for the points has some wear on it from running dry. Are the points causing the timing not to come into play due to this wear on the follower? My timing light shows the timing is retarded and will not advance to the timing mark towards TDC "F" line. Someone in the past looks to have placed marks on the flywheel for some reason. Is the timing and point gap adjusted by the "base" screw alone or am I missing a step somewhere? You can see the mark is retarded and over the F,not on the line.

Points opening late is defiantly a retarded timing issue,,,it's time for a new set
