Ok, my brother-in laws trike started backfireing on deceleration. He brought if over to my house since it happened while he as out riding around. I opened up the seat and took the access cover off and right away I saw the Intake had a big slit on the top and then noticed that his CHEAP AIR FILTER had broken complety off and it was laying by the Starter. So since I had an intake and new Filter I installed the new intake and Filter and adjusted his throttle cable which was loose on the carb mount(The Mechanic that worked on it last time did not tighten the cable onto the bracket)!! And he told me that now his rpms were lower for some reason well the cable was not opening the butterfly all the way.
Anywho's I tighten everything up and started it up and adjusted his idle but it sounded like crap and right away I knew he had a exhaust leak by the header flange. Well looked under neath and was going to take it off and put a new header gasket on it and found that one STUD had broken off at the end of the Acron Nut.
So there is still a piece of Stud sticking out of the head about 1/4 of an inch. Can I take like vise grips and unscrew it out and put a new Stud on or does it have to be Drilled out? Thanks for any suggetions Alleyoop

I would soak it down with some liquid wrench a couple times, tap it a couple times lightly with a hammer on the end of the broken stud, and then try and remove it with some vise grips. Dont use cheap ones because you dont want to round off the lil bit of stud thats left. You can use regular grips but I picked up a pair that is specifically made for gripping bolts. zugzug, Thanks, I will give that a shot, nothing to loose, if it doesn't work then its drilling it out and retaping or a new head. Alleyoop

Well AO I think we all need to keep in mind that when somebody loses top end the throttle cable might be loose. That's one of those simple things we forget to check on, thanks for the tip. I would think the Zugger is right, those studs probably have the same design as the intake manifold studs, except I'm sure they're a helluvalot harder to get out due to the heat issues. While we're talking about putting an exhaust back on, do you guys have any words of wisdom for keeping that doughnut exhaust gasket in place while you're trying to wrestle the header on? I gave up with my stainless exhaust and used red RTV instead. I put a little RTV on it and stuck it in place but it kept moving around and falling out.... ! Rich

Zugzug, thanks for the tip, I was able to take the Broken Stud off the Head with a Pair of Vise Grips. Gave it a couple taps with a small hammer to break any loctite they may have used and it actually came out rather easy. As far as the keeping the Doughnut Exhaust gasket in place I used the same thing, Red RTV. But the trick is when putting the Header On to Glide it up straight and hold it there Do Not Move It when its up against the Doughnut. And you better have the Acron Nuts ready on your Socket so that you can start BOTH nuts bringing the Header up somewhat evenly. If you screw in one nut it may push the Gasket to the other side which happened me twice then the light bulb came on Alleyoop
