This is a variator and clutch upgrade from MonsterGY6. The upgrade comes with a new variator ramp assembly, nine rollers, a clutch assembly, and a torque spring:
First, I wanted to find out if the variator and clutch retaining nuts would come off with an impact wrench. I made a video of the experience, click on the image:Now that the variator is off you must determine what weights are in the stock unit to decide on your modification. The best way to do this is with a digital scales. I ordered a Triton 2 scales from American Science and Surplus in Chicago. Here's a video of weighing the stock weights, click on the image:At 12.7g we can consider these 13g weights. Then I weighed the rollers I got from Steven at MonsterGY6. Steven's upgrade came with a new variator ramp plate which is significantly bigger than the stock. I'm sure the idea there is to allow for a wider pulley and a taller high "gear". Also, it came with 3X11g, 3x13g, and 3x15g weights. The concept here is mix and match to get the weights you want. I decided to go with 13g's which would actually be a tad more than the stock weights. So to get that, I put in 3x11g's and 3x15g's:Which comes out to 78 divided by 6 which is 13g. Here's the new ramp plate loaded with the weights::The ugrade package came with a new clutch assembly and torque spring. To install the torque spring and tensioner springs on the clutch arms these devices can be used:
Heavier weights will push the ramp out farther against the drive pulley giving you more top end. Lighter weights will not push the ramp out as far giving you less top end but more hill climbing ability.
